Job summary

Schenk UK is seeking an experienced HGV Technician Team Leader to lead a workshop of skilled technicians, balancing hands-on maintenance with people management.

You will allocate workloads, guide fault diagnosis, ensure safety, and help maximise fleet availability while meeting DVSA and manufacturer standards.

This role offers 4 on 4 off days, paid at £22.86 per hour, with opportunities to develop leadership and technical skills within a growing tanker operation.

Qualifications

• Significant experience maintaining and repairing HGV tractor units, trailers and tanker equipment.

Responsibilities

• Lead, motivate and support a team of HGV Technicians.
• Allocate workload across the shift to maximise workshop efficiency.
• Monitor productivity, quality and performance against agreed standards.
• Provide technical guidance, coaching and support on complex repairs and fault diagnosis.
• Carry out effective shift handovers to ensure continuity of work.
• Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with Safe Systems of Work.
• Coordinate planned maintenance, inspections and repairs.
• Respond to unplanned maintenance requirements and changing operational priorities.
• Organise breakdown support, including the use of third‑party repair agents where required.
• Make appropriate decisions regarding Vehicle Off Road (VOR) status.
• Keep the Workshop Controller or Workshop Manager informed of work progress and outstanding repairs.
• Liaise with transport planners, suppliers and repair providers outside normal office hours to minimise vehicle downtime.
• Carry out servicing, inspections, maintenance and repairs on HGV tractor units, trailers, tankers and associated equipment.
• Complete and oversee Periodic Safety Inspections (PSIs).
• Support MOT and ADR preparation.
• Undertake MOT final inspections and quality assurance checks where required.
• Review and sign off inspection sheets and maintenance documentation.
• Ensure repairs are completed to company, manufacturer and legislative standards, with a strong focus on first-time fix.
• Control workshop stores, including issuing and ordering parts.
• Monitor parts availability and maintain appropriate stock levels.
• Ensure workshop equipment and resources are used effectively.
• Ensure maintenance records, job cards and inspection reports are completed accurately and on time.
• Complete designated Health & Safety and Safety Plan activities.
• Support internal audits and compliance inspections.
• Maintain high standards of workshop housekeeping.
• Identify opportunities to improve workshop efficiency, safety and quality.
• Analyse recurring defects and recommend preventative maintenance improvements.
• Support the introduction of new processes, systems and best practice.

The Role

As an HGV Technician Team Leader, you will lead and support a team of HGV Technicians while remaining hands‑on and actively involved in the maintenance, inspection and repair of our fleet.

You will be the first line of workshop leadership, responsible for allocating workload, providing technical guidance, supporting fault diagnosis and ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

Working closely with the Workshop Controller and Workshop Manager, you will help maximise fleet availability while ensuring all maintenance activities meet company, manufacturer and legislative requirements.

Key Responsibilities
