Job summary

NMS Recruit is seeking an experienced HGV Shunter to support a busy commercial vehicle dealership. You will safely move and position HGVs and trailers across the yard and workshop, coordinating with the service team to ensure readiness and clear access.

The role includes customer vehicle collections, deliveries and transfers to MOT or test centres as required. Essentially, you will have a valid HGV Class 1 licence, proven HGV manoeuvring experience, and a strong emphasis on safety and regulatory

Qualifications

• Valid HGV Class 1 licence required.
• Experience manoeuvring HGVs, including reversing in confined spaces.
• No more than six penalty points and no DR10 endorsements.
• Solid understanding of driving regulations and safe vehicle handling.
• Safety-conscious with awareness of pedestrians and workshop activity.

Responsibilities

• Safely shunt and manoeuvre HGVs, trailers and other vehicles around yard and into workshop bays.
• Position vehicles for servicing, repairs and inspections according to workshop priorities.
• Organise parking and storage; keep access routes and walkways clear.
• Coordinate vehicle movements with Workshop Controller, Service Reception and Technicians to minimise delays.
• Carry out vehicle and trailer safety checks and report defects promptly.
• Record arrivals and departures; maintain up-to-date movement records.
• Ensure secure parking and proper handling of keys per site procedures.
• Collect and return customer vehicles and transport to MOT or test centres as required.
• Provide professional, customer-focused service to colleagues and customers.
• Keep yard and storage areas clean and organized.
• Follow site speed limits, traffic management procedures and health and safety requirements.

HGV Shunter

The Role

We are looking for an experienced HGV Shunter to support the day-to-day running of a busy commercial vehicle dealership. The primary focus of this role is the safe movement, positioning and organisation of HGVs and trailers across the yard and workshop. You will work closely with the service team to ensure vehicles are ready when required, workshop access remains clear and available parking space is used efficiently. The position also includes customer vehicle collections, deliveries and transfers to MOT or authorised test centres when required.

Key Responsibilities

• Safely shunt and manoeuvre HGVs, trailers and other commercial vehicles around the yard and into and out of workshop bays.
• Position vehicles for servicing, repairs and inspections in line with workshop priorities.
• Organise vehicle parking and storage, keeping access routes, pedestrian walkways and workshop entrances clear.
• Liaise with the Workshop Controller, Service Reception and Technicians to coordinate vehicle movements and minimise delays.
• Carry out vehicle and trailer safety checks, reporting defects, damage or concerns promptly.
• Accurately record vehicles arriving at and leaving the site, maintaining up-to-date movement records.
• Ensure vehicles are parked securely and keys are handled in accordance with site procedures.
• Collect and return customer vehicles and transport vehicles to MOT or authorised test centres as required.
• Provide a professional and helpful service when dealing with customers and colleagues.
• Keep the yard and vehicle storage areas clean, tidy and organised.
• Follow site speed limits, traffic management procedures and health and safety requirements at all times.

Essential Skills and Experience

• A valid HGV Class 1 licence.
• Previous experience driving and manoeuvring HGVs, with confidence reversing and positioning large vehicles in confined spaces.
• No more than six penalty points and no DR10 endorsements.
• A good understanding of relevant driving regulations and safe vehicle handling.
• A safety-conscious approach, with awareness of pedestrians, other vehicles and workshop activity.

Desirable Skills and Experience

• Previous experience as an HGV Shunter, Yard Driver or Yard Operative within a dealership, transport depot or fleet workshop.
• A PSV licence - desirable
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• The ability to use initiative and respond to changing workshop priorities.
• A professional, customer-focused approach.
