Job summary

Staffordshire County Council’s Fleetcare team is seeking a skilled Heavy Vehicle Mechanic to service and maintain a diverse fleet of vehicles including HGVs, vans and plant. You will diagnose faults, perform servicing, and prepare vehicles for MOTs in a busy workshop environment.

ideal candidates will hold a Level 3 NVQ in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent, with a full Category C licence and a commitment to ongoing professional development, including electric/hybrid vehicle knowledge.

Qualifications

• This role requires a recognised Level 3 qualification in vehicle maintenance and repair with practical experience in a commercial vehicle workshop.
• A full driving licence with a minimum Category C entitlement; additional categories are advantageous but not essential.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development, including willingness to pursue Level 3 Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair.
• Strong technical knowledge across diagnostics, MOT preparation, engine/drivetrain, hydraulics and electrical systems.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet DVSA standards and Fleetcare quality standards.

Responsibilities

• Carry out major repairs, servicing, inspections and preventative maintenance across a diverse vehicle fleet (HGVs, vans, plant).
• Diagnose faults using advanced testing and prepare vehicles for annual MOT and statutory inspections.
• Repair and service electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, tail lifts and associated equipment.
• Support winter maintenance and emergency breakdown response as required.
• Maintain accurate service records and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
• Collaborate with colleagues and customers to keep frontline services operating safely.
