Job summary

Fowler Welch in Portsmouth is looking for experienced HGV Class 1 drivers to join our refrigerated transport team. You will operate refrigerated articulated vehicles, delivering and collecting chilled stock from regional distribution centres and farms across the UK.

The role offers varied shifts (4 on 4 off, weekday/ weekend patterns) with start times from 10:00 to 13:00 and enhanced pay for nights and weekends.

Qualifications

• Must possess HGV Class 1 Licence and CPC
• Ability to work efficiently and accurately under pressure
• Strong communication skills and customer focus
• Knowledge of Road Transport Directive and drivers’ hours

Responsibilities

• Operate refrigerated articulated vehicles to deliver/collect chilled stock across the UK
• Complete paperwork accurately and on time
• Adhere to tachograph rules and company procedures
• Conduct daily vehicle checks and temperature monitoring
• Sign and return PODs to Transport Office
• Aim for fuel efficiency targets and safe driving practices
• Perform any other duties as reasonably required

Are you an experienced HGV Class 1 Driver, or newly qualified and ready to begin your driving career? We are recruiting dependable drivers to join our team in Portsmouth. Experience is welcome but not essential—we are happy to invest in drivers who have the right attitude, are willing to learn and are committed to completing the required training.

In your role as a HGV Class 1 Driver, you will be operating refrigerated articulated vehicles, delivering and collecting chilled stock from Local and Regional Distribution Centres as well as Farms and Packhouses across the UK.

Shift patterns available

• 4 on 4 off Days
• Friday to Tuesday Days
• Thursday to Saturday Days

Start times between 10:00 - 13:00 available

Pay rates

You’ll be paid for the hours you work, with a minimum payment of 10 hours per shift. Enhanced rates apply for night hours, Saturdays and Sundays, and overtime is paid after 10 hours.

• Monday to Friday 04:00 - 20:00 - £16.91 per hour
• Monday to Friday 20:00 - 04:00 - £20.29 per hour
• Saturday 04:00 - 20:00 - £19.45 per hour
• Saturday 20:00 - 04:00 - £21.14 per hour
• Sunday and Bank Holiday 04:00 - 20:00 - £20.29 per hour
• Sunday and Bank Holiday 20:00 - 04: 00 - £21.98 per hour

What you'll be doing:

• Ensure correct and thorough completion of paperwork
• Observe and adhere to company rules and procedures, including all aspects of health, safety and hygiene
• Maintain a good working knowledge of operations within the transport department
• Effectively manage own working time in line with the Road Transport Directive
• Adhere to tachograph rules and regulations at all times
• Ensure daily vehicle checks are completed in line with company procedure
• Responsible for unit and trailer, including temperature checks
• Ensure proof of deliveries (PODs) are signed and returned to the Transport Office after delivery
• Achieve and succeed fuel efficiency targets set by the business
• Any other duties as reasonably required

Qualifications

• Possession of HGV Class 1 Licence
• Current CPC
• Knowledge of Road Transport Directive and current drivers’ hours.
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to work efficiently and accurately under pressure.
• Effectively prioritise workload in order to meet set deadline
