Job summary

Ward 1 is a 13-bedded male PICU at Springfield University Hospital, providing 24-hour care for adults aged 18-75 years with severe and enduring mental health problems, following the recovery model.

You will join a multidisciplinary team committed to delivering high-quality, service user-centred care. We seek a compassionate, dedicated HCA eager to make an impact.

It is essential that you understand multidisciplinary team working, leadership, and the challenges faced by individuals with acute mental health issues. You should be passionate about mental health, believe in the recovery model and our Trust values, and work collaboratively with service users and their families. A commitment to learning and staying informed about local and national services is also important.

Main duties of the job

The Healthcare Assistant role is suitable for those with clinical practice experience and training in a ward or similar setting.

HCAs provide personalised care, perform clinical tasks under supervision, and engage extensively with service users.

Progression opportunities include becoming a Nursing Associate or Assistant Practitioner upon completing required training and demonstrating competence.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Skills

  • Work under supervision of a Registered Nurse/ AP/NA/B4 to deliver quality nursing care, addressing physical, psychological, social, recreational, and spiritual needs through therapeutic engagement and activities.
  • Lead and support fundamental care activities: nutrition, hydration, hygiene, comfort, emotional and social support.
  • Support junior staff and provide hands-on care, including:
    • Engaging with service users in an honest, respectful, and non-judgmental manner.
    • Valuing service users as individuals, maintaining dignity and respecting diversity.
    • Escalating concerns to registered nurses.
    • Monitoring and recording clinical observations and vital signs, escalating signs of deterioration as needed.
    • Encouraging healthy lifestyles and facilitating psychosocial activities.
  • Escort service users as required, following Trust policies.
  • Assist with admission and discharge processes, ensuring needs are met, including property checks, orientation, and community support planning under senior clinician guidance.
  • Advocate for service users' needs and rights according to Trust policy.
