In the UK and Ireland WSP are currently over 9,000 employees, operating through four strategic Business Unit Groups (BUGs), 50 plus offices, multiple discipline sectors and growing. The Earth and Environment Business Unit is over 1,500 employees within the Water, Energy, Earth & Environment BUG.

The E&E business has a diverse and rapidly growing portfolio of projects involving everything from:

Mining, aquatic ecology, tunnelling and ground engineering, geotechnical and environmental ground investigation, risk management, strategic environmental assessments, archaeology, acoustics and air quality surveys, inspections and other work on many different types of sites in many different environments and counties.

The E&E business is looking for an experienced H&S practitioner to provide competent health and safety leadership and support to all areas of business delivery. Working with the HSEQ Team, E&E leadership board and the operational leadership from each discipline, along with Clients, Regulatory Authorities, Supply Chain Partners and Joint Venture Partners to deliver continued improvement and excellence in safety, health and wellbeing.

This role reports to the E&E Operations Director, along with BUG H&S Business Partner and will require the management of two H&S business Partners and an H&S Advisor.

You will
  • Be a full time, fully active, and engaged member of WSP’s HSEQ Team, providing focused competent H&S leadership and support to the operating business including strategy development & delivery, bid support, project specific support, client advice, including expert advice on specific H&S issues, training, etc.
  • Liaise with, and support to, the discipline operational leadership.
  • Monitor and report on key performance indicators (managing data, tracking and providing statistical analysis and report compilation).
  • Cascade of safety and health communication to the disciplines and BU.
  • Deliver BU and discipline H&S objectives.
  • Incident and accident investigation and managing incident data.
  • Manage and run H&S forums in the disciplines.
  • H&S elements of project bid support.
  • Internal discipline H&S assurance auditing (office and site).
  • Provide focused, competent H&S advice to a level commensurate with training and experience.
  • Drive H&S culture and behaviors that result in long term change.
  • Develop and maintain assigned H&S policy documents and tools held in our safety management system.
  • Produce and deliver monthly operational/SLT board reports that inform and instruct the leadership teams on H&S performance.
  • Be a vocal advocate of H&S and have the passion to seek out and drive forward H&S initiatives, independently or as part of a team, with a goal of continually improving H&S for our colleagues.
  • Follow a process of continual professional development; being aware of, and in touch with any changes to relevant UK and Ireland H&S legislation, Approved Codes of Practice and industry best practice standards.
  • Work as part of the wider WSP community liaising with, as appropriate, our UK and Ireland colleagues, the Business Excellence Team, Strategic Business Unit / Discipline Stream Operational Teams, Management Services Teams, Corporate Real Estate Team, Location Directors, H&S Representatives, Project Teams, and all other key stakeholders as appropriate.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
  • Experience in the specific health and safety challenges associated with the engineering of the built environment
  • Knowledge, experience and understanding of key clients, their expectations, standards and supply chain delivery requirements.
  • NEBOSH Diploma (or similar).
  • Experience working with senior leadership and operational leadership
  • A diligent, hard-working self-starter with initiative and ability to work within a dispersed team environment and develop relationships and rapport with all stakeholders. Willingness to continually learn and develop.
  • Strong influencing skills to promote and ensure compliance and best practice in operational situations where it is essential to find a solution to the problem if risk is identified.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills with the ability to influence and interact with people at all levels in a diplomatic and persuasive manner.
  • Training / presentation skills.
  • To be able to work with and manage appropriately, sensitive and confidential information, dealing with all stakeholders with the highest level of respect and professionalism.
