About the role

Balfour Beatty is seeking a Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Advisor to join our Traction Systems Rail team in London. The role will be based in Canary Wharf and will cover various rail sites primarily in London.

The HSW Advisor will support and promote the delivery of the Zero Harm Action Plan and work with the HSW Manager to ensure project compliance with the UK Business Management System (BMS) HSW requirements.

What you'll be doing

  1. Understand and support the delivery of Balfour Beatty Rail HS&W Strategy and BBUK 8-Point Plan.
  2. Contribute to implementing, delivering, and reviewing the BU Zero Harm Action Plan and Sustainability Action Plan (BTGP).
  3. Support the delivery of HS&W Key Performance Indicators at the project level.
  4. Assist work-winning teams as required.
  5. Provide expertise in investigating accidents, incidents, and near misses, in line with Balfour Beatty Group Standards and BMS Requirements.
  6. Conduct scheduled support visits to operational projects to provide support and advice to local teams and operatives.
  7. Produce formal reports using the Project Portal to record HS&W inspections and review project performance against UK HSES Regulatory Framework & BMS requirements.
  8. Regularly check Environmental Risk Management practices, ensuring risks and opportunities are identified and managed.
  9. Promote Principles of Prevention and Hierarchy of Control.
  10. Deliver ongoing HS&W training to meet project and business needs.
  11. Support project-specific Supply Chain Engagement Strategies.
  12. Undertake HS&W Champion roles as directed and provide feedback to the wider team.
  13. Allocate time for HS&W innovation and best practice research.
  14. Assist in developing and reviewing Safe System of Work (SSOW).
  15. Help develop HS&W Case Studies from signature projects.

Who we're looking for

The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Health, Safety and Wellbeing Qualifications: NEBOSH Diploma, NCRQ, NVQ Level 6, or equivalent, either attained or in progress.
  • Ability to influence and promote a positive safety culture.
  • Experience in incident and accident investigation.
  • Strong understanding of UK Health and Safety Regulatory Framework and UK BMS.
  • Ability to prepare formal reports and publications on HS&W topics.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and applying expertise to add value.
  • Broad experience in construction and civils projects.
  • Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) competence.
  • Ability to engage effectively at all levels.

Desirable qualities/experience include:

  • Additional skills and qualifications in technical areas.
  • Graduate Membership of IOSH (GradIOSH) or working towards it.
  • Recognised Internal Auditor qualification.
  • Good understanding of CDM 2015 roles and responsibilities.
  • Environmental and Sustainability qualifications.
