We are the independent charity that loves and looks after six of the most wonderful palaces in the world. The palaces are the setting for the stories that shape us all, and we’re bringing them to people in ways that mean more to them. We want everyone to find themselves in the spaces and stories we share.
His Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a Scheduled Monument. For a thousand years it has dominated the City of London and remains an important site of Royal pageant, and guards the Crown Jewels. Today it welcomes 3 million visitors a year and is London’s premier tourist attraction. It is home to a community of ex-service personnel (Tower Officers and Yeoman Warders/Beefeaters), six ravens, and has its own pub.
The Senior Health and Safety Advisor provides professional, qualified advice to colleagues on all aspects of health and safety at the Tower. Our activities include everything from parades and gun salutes to blockbuster events and complex construction and conservation projects. The successful applicant will be a problem solver, offering pragmatic and realistic solutions to enable our charity to succeed, all the while preserving the essential character and appearance of the Tower.
There is a strong focus on the operational management of the Tower of London, including incident management. The role includes being one of the Duty Governor covers, which is a 24-hour onsite duty as the Tower Director’s representative should anything go wrong. As well as some week-day commitments, you will be on weekend duty for around one weekend in every six. To accommodate this, there is a 2-bedroom self-catering flat onsite.
About You
The successful candidate will be an experienced safety professional: proactive, pragmatic, and equally enthusiastic about protecting the historic fabric and traditions of the Tower.
You will have a formal qualification in health and safety management. You will have experience in an active safety management role, with membership of a relevant professional body.
Previous experience in visitor attractions or other large public venues in the heritage and arts/ culture sector, knowledge of construction safety issues, will be a major advantage.
You will be a good team player, adept at multiple stakeholder management, and good under pressure. As Duty Governor, you will need to manage any incident as part of the ‘Silver’ level of incident command and control.
Candidates will require a good knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and have very good written and oral communication skills.
We have adopted a hybrid model of part working from home and part working from site, we are open to discussing what best works for individuals and their work life balance whilst also delivering the business requirements.
Benefits Include
Hybrid working , although you are expected onsite for three of the five working days.
Enhanced holiday entitlement
Generous Employers Pension Contributions (up to 11%)
Annual Pay reviews & Bonuses
Critical Illness Cover & Life Assurance
Family friendly policies and benefits
Staff discounts and membership to all palaces
