O’Neill & Brennan in Oxford is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Advisor to support a £50m+ commercial development on site. You will work with the Project Manager and Senior H&S Manager to maintain high safety standards from construction through to completion.

The role requires proactive H&S leadership on site, conducting audits, developing RAMS, ensuring CDM compliance and delivering toolbox talks to subcontractors and site teams.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in a Health & Safety role within the construction industry.
  • Experience working for a Main Contractor or within Tier 1/Tier 2 environments.
  • NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge of UK construction health & safety legislation.
  • Good understanding of CDM Regulations and site inspections.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to build relationships with site teams.
  • Proactive approach to identifying and managing health & safety risks; report writing skills.
  • CSCS or appropriate site safety qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Promote a positive health & safety culture and engage with site teams and subcontractors.
  • Attend project meetings and provide health & safety updates and guidance.

Job description

Our client is a well-established Tier 1 Main Contractor with an excellent reputation for delivering complex, high-value construction projects across the UK.

They are currently looking to appoint an experienced Health & Safety Advisor to join the project team on a £50m+ commercial development in Oxford.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Health & Safety professional looking to work on a major project within a structured Tier 1 environment, supporting the delivery of a high-profile scheme from the construction phase through to completion.

The successful candidate will work closely with the Project Manager, Senior Health & Safety Manager and wider site team, providing proactive health and safety support and helping to maintain the highest standards across the project.

The Role

As Health & Safety Advisor, you will be responsible for providing day-to-day health and safety advice and support across the project, ensuring that works are planned and delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with relevant legislation, company procedures and project requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide competent and proactive health and safety advice to the project team, site management and supply chain.
  • Carry out regular site inspections, audits and health & safety tours, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring corrective actions are implemented.
  • Monitor compliance with the Construction Phase Plan, RAMS and relevant company policies and procedures.
  • Review and provide feedback on subcontractor RAMS, ensuring they are suitable and effectively implemented on site.
  • Assist with the development, implementation and ongoing review of project-specific health and safety documentation.
  • Support the site team in maintaining compliance with CDM Regulations and other relevant health and safety legislation.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences, assisting with root-cause analysis and the implementation of preventative measures.
  • Monitor trends, identify recurring issues and provide practical recommendations to improve site safety performance.
  • Deliver and assist with toolbox talks, briefings, inductions and other health and safety training initiatives.
  • Promote a positive health and safety culture across the project and actively engage with site teams and subcontractors.
  • Attend project and subcontractor meetings where appropriate, providing health and safety updates and advice.
  • Work closely with construction teams to ensure health and safety requirements are considered during planning and delivery of works.
  • Maintain accurate health and safety records, reports and inspection documentation.
  • Support the Senior Health & Safety Manager with the implementation and monitoring of the project's health and safety strategy.
  • Assist with emergency planning, environmental initiatives and wider compliance requirements where required.
  • Keep up to date with relevant legislation, industry guidance and best practice.
About You

The successful candidate will ideally have experience working within a main contracting environment, preferably on large-scale commercial, industrial, residential, mixed-use or similarly complex construction projects.

You will be a proactive and confident Health & Safety professional who is comfortable working alongside site management, subcontractors and senior project stakeholders.

Essential
  • Proven experience in a Health & Safety role within the construction industry.
  • Experience working for a Main Contractor or within a Tier 1/Tier 2 construction environment.
  • NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent.
  • Strong working knowledge of UK construction health & safety legislation.
  • Good understanding of CDM Regulations.
  • Experience undertaking site inspections, audits and investigations.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build effective relationships with site teams and subcontractors.
  • A proactive approach to identifying and managing health & safety risks.
  • Good report writing and organisational skills.
  • CSCS/appropriate site safety qualification.
Desirable
  • NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
  • TechIOSH / GradIOSH / CMIOSH membership.
  • Experience working on projects valued at £50m+.
  • Experience within commercial, office, life sciences, residential, healthcare or other complex construction environments.
  • Experience working within a structured Tier 1 health & safety management system.
  • Temporary Works, lifting operations, logistics or other relevant specialist cons
