Job description

Health and Safety Manager, A&P Tyne

Our guiding principle is to put safety at the heart of everything we do. A&P’s number one priority is to safeguard the safety and wellbeing of our staff, customers, and sub-contractors.

We are looking for an HSE Manager to lead and maintain our team’s awareness of potential unplanned risks involving people, time, reputation, and equipment. Could that be you?

Who are we?

Located in Hebburn, A&P Tyne operates the largest commercial dry-dock on the East Coast of England and has been integral to the North East’s shipbuilding communities for decades.

Our facility features the largest commercial dry-dock, two deep water berths, and a fabrication facility equipped with panel line, rolling, plasma, and gas burning machines.

We are committed to safety in every decision, working together to reduce workplace accidents. We invest heavily in processes, infrastructure, and behaviors to ensure a safe, healthy, and prosperous workplace.

Our diverse order book involves ship repair and conversion work for commercial vessels and the offshore community, offering opportunities to work on a variety of projects.

Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and develop the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) team, reporting on safety KPIs and environmental performance to senior management.
  2. Ensure compliance with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards across various operations including cleaning, blasting, painting, tank cleaning, insulation, hot work, heavy steel fabrication, dry docks, panel lines, and subcontractors.
  3. Maintain a safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible working environment, managing risks associated with heavy machinery, hazardous materials, water safety, and high-risk operations.
  4. Conduct risk assessments and hazard identifications for all operational activities such as hot work, confined spaces, and work at height.
  5. Oversee HSE procedures for various activities and ensure water safety protocols are in place, especially around dry docks and wet environments.
  6. Enforce safe systems of work for heavy machinery and mobile plant operations.
  7. Manage permit-to-work systems, especially for hot work and confined space entry.
  8. Oversee subcontractor performance and compliance.
  9. Coordinate safety audits, inspections, emergency drills, and foster a safety culture through training and engagement.
  10. Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and implement corrective actions.
  11. Engage with authorities, certification bodies, and external stakeholders as needed.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Experience in a similar HSE role within heavy engineering, marine, or industrial environments.
  • Proven experience with ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 standards.
  • Experience managing high-risk activities such as hot work, confined space, heavy lifts, blasting, painting, and water safety.
  • Strong knowledge of HSE legislation and best practices.
  • Experience managing and auditing subcontractors and third-party vendors.
  • Leadership, communication, and report-writing skills.
  • Competence in incident investigation and root cause analysis methodologies (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone).
  • Familiarity with environmental monitoring, waste management, and pollution control.

Why join us?

  • Personal Growth: Make a significant impact while working with experts from marine and structural engineering industries.
  • Financial Security: Benefits include a pension with up to 4% employer contribution and life cover at 7x salary.
  • Healthy Living: Support for healthy living, including sick pay, health cash plans, dental, optical, physiotherapy, mental health support, and virtual GP services.
  • Work-life Balance: 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, plus support for maternity, paternity, and parental leave.
