Job summary

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust seeks a Head of Risk to lead the Trust’s risk management framework and provide assurance to the Board. The role owns the Board Assurance Framework and Corporate Risk Register, oversees the Risk Team and advises executives on strategic options across patient safety, safety, information governance and business continuity.

Candidate requires governance-related MSc or equivalent experience, and board-level experience.

Qualifications

• MSc in a governance-related subject, or equivalent experience in the role.
• Knowledge through study and/or work experience in risk management.

Responsibilities

• Own the Risk Assurance Framework, mapping objectives to risks, controls and assurance, and compiling risk reports.
• Work with internal auditors to ensure internal control mechanisms are fit for purpose and monitored.
• Ensure risk management and risk registers for all services are high quality and up to date, and that high-risk areas are dealt with appropriately.
• Take responsibility for system quality assurance, including data entry accuracy.
• Evaluate organisational risks and advise executives on strategic options.
• Deliver risk-related education and training, and assess skills and competencies against relevant legislation and standards.
• Provide specialist knowledge of the risk management software for recording, reviewing and reporting on risks and registers.
• Lead and develop the Risk Team and oversee governance and assurance processes.
• Offer constructive challenge and expert advice on all aspects of risk management.
• Collaborate with patient safety, health and safety, fire safety, information governance, infection prevention and business continuity teams.

What the job involves

Qualifications

• MSc in a governance-related subject, or equivalent experience in the role
• Knowledge gained through continued study and/or work experience in risk management

Experience

• Experience working in a multi-disciplinary or multi-agency health or social care environment
• Experience of risk management and managing projects, with some experience of strategic development and planning
• Experience working at board level, influencing, challenging and providing assurance to the Chief Executive, Chair and Non-Executive Directors
• Strong project management skills
