Job summary

Marchant Recruitment is representing an Ascot-based top-rated school seeking an experienced Head of Geography to lead the Geography department in Berkshire. You will drive curriculum development, lead a team of teachers and ensure engaging, rigorous lessons across Key Stages.

The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on teaching, focusing on fieldwork, current affairs and global issues to inspire students to think critically about the world.

Qualifications

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent is required.
• Degree in Geography or a closely related subject is required.
• Strong subject knowledge across physical and human geography.
• Experience teaching Geography in a secondary school.
• Experience preparing students for GCSE and/or A-Level examinations.
• Ability to lead, motivate and support colleagues effectively.
• Understanding of curriculum planning, assessment and strategies for improving student progress.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
• Commitment to high expectations, inclusive teaching and continuous improvement.
• Willingness to lead a department and drive growth.

Responsibilities

• Lead, motivate and support the Geography department.
• Teach Geography across the relevant Key Stages.
• Oversee curriculum planning and ensure lessons are well sequenced and engaging.
• Support students in developing geographical knowledge and analytical skills.
• Monitor student progress, review assessment data and identify improvement opportunities.
• Prepare students for GCSE and A-Level examinations.
• Support colleagues with lesson planning, teaching strategies and professional development.
• Maintain high standards of teaching, learning, behaviour and student engagement.
• Manage departmental resources and contribute to budget planning.
• Encourage fieldwork, case studies, current affairs and practical learning.
• Work with senior leaders and other departments on school priorities.
• Contribute to curriculum reviews and whole-school initiatives.
