Be Applied Ltd. is seeking a Head of Engineering to lead and scale our national education platform in a fully remote UK role. You will drive engineering strategy, oversee secure and scalable systems, and work with product, design and data teams to deliver impactful solutions for classrooms nationwide.

You will guide architecture, manage a six-figure budget, and mentor engineers while embracing flexible hours and remote collaboration. This leadership role values autonomy and measurable impact.

Qualifications

• 5+ years holding responsibility for engineering leadership across a department.
• Experience recruiting, developing and managing a high-performing engineering department.
• Experience managing a 6-figure budget, including software licences, cloud infrastructure and contractor spend.
• Proven success building and running secure, scalable, highly available and accessible web applications to Government Digital Service or equivalent standards.
• Experience owning the architecture of a comparable multi-product platform and evolving it as traffic and product grow.
• Exceptional standards of code quality and the ability to coach and mentor other engineers to achieve those standards.
• Familiarity with open data or open-source product development and/or collaborating with external partners and government bodies.

Responsibilities

• Develop and manage a high-performing engineering department.
• Lead engineering work delivering our product roadmap to a secure, scalable, highly available and accessible standard.
• Lead the technical architecture of our platform, aligned with data infrastructure.
• Improve Oak's engineering practice in quality and velocity.
• Manage the engineering budget (minimum six figures).
• Maintain specialist expertise and act as an authority across Oak and the sector.
• As part of the Leadership Team, contribute to strategy and culture.
• Work in cross-functional squads with colleagues across the organisation.
• Deputise for the Director of Engineering and take on other responsibilities as required.
