Job summary

Oak National Academy Limited is seeking a Head of Engineering to shape and lead the platform behind our national curriculum and safe AI initiatives. This is a leadership role focused on delivering robust, accessible, classroom-ready technology used across schools.

Oak National Academy Limited is a fully remote, UK-based non-profit partnering with teachers to provide sequenced curriculum and digital resources.

Qualifications

• 5+ years holding engineering leadership across a department.
• Experience recruiting, developing and managing a high-performing engineering department.
• Experience managing a six-figure budget, including software licences, cloud infrastructure and contractor spend.
• Proven success building and running secure, scalable, highly available web applications to Government Digital Service or equivalent standards.
• Experience owning the architecture of a multi-product platform and evolving it with growth.
• Exceptional standards of code quality with ability to coach/mentor engineers.
• Familiarity with open data/open-source product development and collaboration with external partners/government bodies (desirable).

Responsibilities

• Develop and manage a high-performing engineering department.
• Lead engineering work delivering our product roadmap to be secure, scalable, highly available and accessible to the widest audience, meeting Government Digital Service standards.
• Lead the technical architecture of our platform aligned with data infrastructure.
• Improve the standard, quality and velocity of Oak’s engineering practice.
• Manage the engineering budget (minimum 6 figures).
• Maintain specialist expertise in software engineering and be an authority across Oak and the sector.
• Be part of Leadership Team, shaping strategy and culture.
• Work in cross-functional squads across the organisation; deputise for the Director of Engineering.
