Job summary

Morgan Hunt UK Limited is seeking a Head of Department for a college in the United Kingdom. The role involves leading the curriculum team, overseeing programme managers, and driving high standards of teaching, learning and assessment.

  • Possession of a recognised teaching qualification.
  • Successful recent experience of running a course or courses.
  • Evidence of motivating learners and developing and maintaining high levels of student retention and achievement.
  • Demonstrates understanding of the learning environment and support for learners of varying ability.
  • Experience of setting targets and monitoring progress against those targets.
  • Experience of managing quality improvement.
  • Experience of operating disciplinary procedures with students.
  • Experience of managing and mentoring staff.
  • Experience of managing physical and financial resources.
  • Knowledge of FE curriculum issues within 14-19 age group.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and develop the curriculum team, overseeing programme managers to ensure effective leadership within the department.
  • Foster a culture of high expectations among staff and students promoting excellence and continuous development.
  • Equitably delegate leadership responsibilities and implement individualised learning schemes across courses.
  • Participate in staff appointments, induction, performance evaluations, and address staff concerns.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to manage resources and monitor expenditure with cross-department communication.
  • Implement Teaching, Learning and Assessment Framework to enhance learner outcomes across the department.
  • Establish procedures and resources to uphold high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment.
  • Identify and monitor at-risk students and implement targeted support strategies.
  • Review provision via Quality Cycle and develop action plans to improve teaching and learner outcomes.
  • Disseminate good practice and contribute to cross-training and knowledge sharing.
  • Develop links with stakeholders to broaden subjects offered and improve student achievement.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders to align curriculum with local community needs and LSIP.

Job description

Our College client are looking for a Head of Department to join their ranks. This role would be perfect for a Programme Manager to step up into the role.

The Role
  • Lead, manage, and develop the curriculum team, overseeing programme managers to ensure effective leadership within the department. 1
  • Foster a culture of high expectations among both staff and students promoting excellence and continuous development.
  • Equitably delegate leadership responsibilities and ensure the effective implementation of individualised learning schemes across all courses.
  • Participate in staff appointments, induction, performance evaluations, and management addressing any issues or concerns regarding staff conduct, capability, and discipline.
  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to manage resources and monitor expenditure while maintaining effective communication and collaboration with other departments
  • Implement the Teaching, Learning and Assessment Framework to enhance learner outcomes ensuring its consistent application across the department.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate procedures and resources to uphold high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment consistently across the department.
  • Identify and monitor students at risk of under performing, implementing targeted support strategies to improve their outcomes.
  • Review the effectiveness of provision following the College's Quality Cycle, developing and executing action plans to enhance teaching, learning, assessment and learner outcomes.
  • Disseminate and promote good practice within the department and contribute to cross training events ensuring knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • Develop effective links with relevant stakeholders to enhance subjects offered, fostering collaborations that contribute to improved student achievement.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders to develop curriculum that aligns with the local community's needs and the LSIP ensuring the educational offerings are relevant and beneficial to the community
The Person
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent
  • Possession of a recognised teaching qualification
  • Successful recent experience of running a course or courses
  • Evidence of motivating learners and developing and maintaining high levels of student retention and achievement
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the learning environment and the support required for a variety of students of differing ability
  • Experience of setting targets and monitoring progress against those targets
  • Experience of managing quality improvement
  • Can demonstrate experience of operating disciplinary procedures with students
  • Experience of successfully managing and/or mentoring staff
  • Experience of managing physical and financial resources
  • Knowledge and understanding of curriculum issues and developments within Further Education and in particular within the 14-19 age group and the Further Education curriculum
  • Excellent communication skills both written and spoken
  • Experience of successfully leading and motivating others
  • Ability to understand and accurately interpret complex information and make sound, well-considered decisions and judgements
  • Ability to initiate and develop creative and workable strategies to improve performance
  • Proven to prioritise and organise work effectively
