Job description

We are currently looking for a full-time Butcher to lead our butchery team and help us to grow and develop Matangi Prime Meat LTD. The successful candidate will be a passionate craftsperson with an eye for detail, who is keen to work with our award-winning, top-quality beef and lamb.

We are a boutique family-owned business and recent winner of the 2025 Outstanding NZ Food Producer Awards. We are very passionate about our land, our animals, and ultimately the product we are producing. We are looking for a top butcher who shares our drive and vision and is keen to work in partnership to help us further cement Matangi as the premier NZ brand for top quality Grass Fed Angus Beef and chicory finished Lamb.

Qualifications & experience-

  • You will need to be an experienced butcher with 5 years minimum in a senior position.
  • Knowledge of international trends, innovative cuts, and customized dry aging.
  • Experience and passion for nose-to-tail butchery.
  • Drive to lead and continue to develop our meat business to the highest standard.

Tasks & responsibilities -

  • Full operational responsibility.
  • Processing carcasses from break down to fine cutting. Creating premium cuts, mince, small goods and diced beef. We supply top chefs and private clients who have very high standards, so an eye for detail and pride in what you do is exceptionally important.
  • Provide guidance to clients and staff regarding the preparation and cooking of certain cuts.

It is also expected that you will have -

  • A high level of attention to detail.
  • Pride in your workspace and exceptional hygiene, health and safety practices.
  • Be energetic, proactive and have great time management skills.
  • Take pride in, and be an ambassador for the Matangi Brand.
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Be reliable, hardworking and client-focused.

About UsMatangi is a highly ambitious boutique producer of Grass Fed Black Angus Beef and chicory-finished Lamb. With a breeding herd of 250 EQ (Eating Quality) Angus Cows on our two farms in Hawkes Bay we provide award-winning beef and lamb to selected top NZ restaurant chefs and to discerning private clients via our online store, and retail butchery in Hastings. Our target group in NZ is meat Connoisseurs.
