Job summary

Torbay Council is seeking a Harbour Assistant for Brixham to cover 37 hours per week in a permanent role. You will perform practical maintenance, harbour operations and customer-facing tasks within a busy maritime environment, supporting the fishing industry and harbour users.

The role requires hands-on skills, flexibility and teamwork, with training opportunities in maritime qualifications. The position is based at Brixham Harbour under the Pride in Place department.

Qualifications

• Practical experience in maintenance, construction, engineering, mechanical or trade-based work.
• Confidence using hand and power tools safely and effectively.
• Ability to travel across harbours and work in a maritime environment.

Responsibilities

• Support safe and efficient day-to-day operation of Brixham Harbour.
• Carry out maintenance, repairs and improvements across harbour infrastructure and facilities.
• Inspect harbour assets and respond quickly to operational issues.
• Assist with berth management, harbour activities and marine operations.
• Maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety and presentation throughout the harbour.
• Work closely with fishermen, harbour users, contractors and visiting vessels.
• Provide excellent customer service and act as a positive ambassador for the harbour.
• Respond to incidents, emergencies and changing priorities as required.
