Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Graduate Tunnelling and Underground Structures Engineer in Croydon for a 2027 start. You’ll join a global infrastructure firm, work on challenging tunnelling projects, and progress through a structured graduate development programme with mentoring and chartership support.

The role emphasizes applying civil, structural and geotechnical knowledge across projects, with a hybrid work model and opportunities to lead elements of projects as you grow.

Qualifications

• A degree in Civil or Civil & Structural Engineering with a 2:1 or above.
• MSc/MEng in Civil/Geotechnical/Tunnelling Engineering would be an advantage.
• Any existing construction experience achieved through the degree would also prove advantageous.
• Willing and able to work towards a professional qualification (ICE or IStructE).
• Demonstrable interest in tunnelling projects and promoting tunnelling activities in transport and utilities.

Responsibilities

• Work within a wide range of sectors offering a challenging workload: water tunnels, highway tunnels, rock caverns, rail, mining, airports, onshore/offshore tunnels, power tunnels.
• Apply civil, structural and geotechnical knowledge gained during your degree.
• Feasibility studies & optioneering through preliminary and detailed design; understand safe construction.
• Tunnel, shaft and cavern designs in hard & soft ground using various methods.
• Identify and resolve complex engineering problems using finite element software and empirical methods.
• In time you may lead small projects or elements of larger projects and advise to team members.
• Identify opportunities to expand the business through client managers and build a broad network.
