Job summary

Arup is seeking a Graduate Mechanical Engineer to join our Tunnel Ventilation team in the UK. The role focuses on mechanical design and analysis of tunnels and underground networks, including rapid transit, rail, and road tunnels.

You will work alongside architecture, electrical, environmental, and geotechnical engineers on international projects. You should hold a relevant Master’s degree, have strong aerodynamics/thermodynamics knowledge, and be adept with CFD simulations and coding (MATLAB,

  • Master's degree in Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields.
  • Course accredited by Engineering Council or other accrediting body.
  • Graduate membership of IMechE or be prepared to join a professional body.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and overall MS Office compatibility.
  • Strong understanding of aerodynamics and thermodynamics, and numerical analysis with CFD familiarity.
  • Experience with coding languages such as MATLAB, Python, Power BI or VBA for Excel.
  • Interest in applying AI to automate repetitive data processing.
  • Enthusiasm for building/infrastructure (station and tunnel) design and related sectors.
  • Analytical thinking and presentation/communication skills.
  • Proactive, initiative-taking and process-improvement mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to mechanical design and analysis of tunnels and underground networks.
  • Support varied high-profile clients and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Engage in building services exposure including ventilation and piping where applicable.
  • Collaborate with architects, electrical, and geotechnical engineers to deliver integrated designs.
  • Develop and apply CFD and other simulations to validate designs.
  • Communicate results and recommendations clearly to colleagues and clients.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Graduate Mechanical Engineer to join our team of bright professionals in Tunnel Ventilation. From your first day, you'll join an unrivalled community of experts, where everyone is supported in their career path and encouraged to work towards a professional qualification.

You will help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients. While you'll have a great deal of responsibility from day one, we'll give you the chance to take on more as you progress and broaden your skills. You will focus on mechanical design and analysis of tunnels and underground networks including; rapid transit systems, rail, automatic people movers, road tunnels, and cable tunnels. You will also have the opportunity to work on building services projects to gain exposure in all aspects of mechanical services. Our projects are often international, giving you the chance to work across other work cultures and countries.

The person is expected to have a good comprehension of aerodynamics and thermodynamics, numerical analysis and simulation, such as CFD. Experience of tunnel ventilation is not required. Knowledge of design projects would be beneficial. You may have the opportunity to be involved in other aspects of mechanical systems design for buildings, including ventilation systems, heating, piped services etc.

You will provide support to team members to deliver an effective and professional service to our clients. Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of our design teams, you will have the opportunity to work alongside experts in the following fields: Architecture, Electrical Engineers, Environmental Services Engineers, Fire Engineers, Acousticians, Tunnelling and Geotechnical Engineers, and Project Managers

Is this role right for you?

For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes:

  • Master's degree in Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, alternatively Physics or Applied Mathematics.
  • Studying, or have studied, a course accredited by the Engineering Council or other accrediting body
  • graduate membership of an appropriate professional institution such as the IMechE or be prepared to join a relevant professional body
  • Possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Good understanding of aerodynamics and thermodynamics, numerical analysis and simulation, such as CFD
  • Some experience with coding languages such as MATLAB, Python, Powerbi or Visual Basics Excel
  • Artificial intelligence to help with repetitive data processing Automation of data processing
  • Enthusiasm for a career in building and infrastructure (station and tunnel) design, underpinned by a knowledge and understanding of our sector and work
