Job summary

AECOM is hiring Graduate Mechanical Engineers to join our Water teams across Birmingham, Leeds and other UK offices. This graduate program offers exposure to feasibility, outline, detail and construction design, with a hybrid working model to support flexibility.

You will engage in mechanical design for water infrastructure projects, collaborate with multi-discipline teams, and develop skills through ADVANCE and other professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

• MEng in Mechanical Engineering (2:1 or above) preferred.
• Willing to work toward Chartered or Incorporated Engineer with the relevant institution.
• Strong report writing and communication skills; teamwork and adaptability.

Responsibilities

• Assist mechanical design for wastewater and water infrastructure projects.
• Produce pumping calculations, system schematics and equipment schedules.
• Prepare engineering specifications for hydraulics and pump systems.
• Collaborate with clients to support project delivery and asset performance.
• Develop lifting, access and maintenance plans.
• Coordinate with design teams, clients and contractors.
• Provide timely reporting to the client and internal team lead.
• Work with civil, mechanical, electrical and process engineers across UK teams.

Are you ready to shape the future of water infrastructure?

We are looking for Graduate Mechanical Engineers to join our established and growing Water teams with opportunities to be based across our North and Midlands offices - Birmingham, Chesterfield, Leeds and Manchester while also benefiting from our flexible hybrid working model. The teams are delivering an exciting portfolio of water programmes and projects through long term frameworks with key clients including major UK water companies (Thames Water, Wessex Water, Welsh Water, Severn Trent Water, Southern Water and Yorkshire) and Tier 1 Contractors.

You will have the opportunity to engage in all design stages, including Feasibility, Outline, Detail, and Construction Design, ensuring compliance with National and International Design Standards.

Here’s what you'll do:

Mechanical Engineering Design

Support senior and lead mechanical engineers in the development and management of all aspects of mechanical design in wastewater and water infrastructure / treatment projects, including:

• Pumping calculations and specifications;
• Production of system schematics;
• Production of equipment and drive schedules;
• Production of engineering specification documents in relation to hydraulics and pump systems;
• Working with our clients to assist them with project delivery, asset and network performance and design;
• Production of lifting, access and maintenance plans;
• Liaise with internal and external design teams, clients and contractors as appropriate;
• Provision of timely reporting to both the client and internal team lead.

Work closely with civil, mechanical, electrical and process engineers to deliver a variety of interesting small and large projects from concept to detailed design. Many of the project teams are UK wide, offering an excellent, unbeatable opportunity to share expertise and broaden knowledge through the company.

Digital Solutions

AECOM’s digital strategy is driving the adoption of global digital solutions internally in our design process, to improve quality and consistency and streamline activities. You will help shape these digital offerings and use them on projects, including BIM, ProjectWise, intelligent P&ID’s and AECOM’s own tools developed in-house, such as our pumping station generator.

• MEng in Mechanical Engineering (2:1 or above, or equivalent) would be preferred;
• Relevant work experience would be an advantage;
• Enthusiastic, hard-working, technically proficient, with ambition and drive;
• Basic computer skills essential (Word/Excel) and good report writing skills;
• Willing and able to work towards professional qualifications such as Chartered or Incorporated Engineer with the relevant institution (e.g. IMechE)
• Demonstrable interest in water projects;
• Structure & prioritise work effectively through close cooperation with the team as a whole;
