Job summary

BMT is offering a Graduate Data & AI Consultant role within its Applied Technology capability. This two-year graduate programme builds foundations in applied data science and consultancy, with mentorship, project experience and tailored technical development.

You will work alongside data scientists, AI researchers, data engineers and domain specialists, across Defence and regulated environments. Hybrid work with UK offices is available.

Qualifications

• Degree in data science, computer science, or related field.
• Practical experience with Python for data projects.
• Foundation in statistics, ML and AI principles.
• Ability to communicate findings to technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

• Explore, prepare and analyse data to understand customer problems.

Job Title: Graduate Data & AI Consultant (Applied Data Science)

Contract Type: Permanent

Location: This is a hybrid role, where you can work from home and one of our UK offices (Bath, Bristol, London, Fareham). Depending on projects needs you will be expected to travel to customer sites and BMT offices.

Due to the nature of the work undertaken, successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of UK Security Clearance. Eligibility requirements are determined by the relevant UK Government security standards and may be subject to nationality, residency, and background criteria. About The Role

Join BMT’s multidisciplinary Data & AI team within BMT’s Applied Technology capability to join us in the application of data science and artificial intelligence to real customer problems.

Our work combines consultancy, research and practical delivery in Defence, government and other regulated or high-consequence environments. Depending on the project, you might explore and prepare data, develop and evaluate analytical or AI models, build a prototype tool, or help turn a promising approach into a solution that can be implemented and supported.

You will work alongside experienced Data Scientists, AI Researchers, Data Architects, Data Engineers and Data Governance specialists. This breadth will help you build strong foundations, understand how different Data & AI disciplines fit together and gradually shape the direction of your career.

This is a graduate development role. We do not expect you to arrive with experience in every area. We are looking for strong foundations, curiosity and the potential to grow. Through BMT’s two-year graduate programme, project experience, mentoring and tailored technical development, you will build capability in applied Data Science, AI and professional consultancy.

What you will do

With support appropriate to your experience, you will:

• Explore, prepare and analyse data to understand customer problems and identify useful evidence;
• Develop and test analytical, statistical, machine-learning or AI approaches;
• Evaluate performance, limitations and risks, and communicate findings clearly to stakeholders;
• Contribute to prototypes, tools and data products that address user and customer needs;
• Apply coding best practices including, version control, review, testing and clear documentation;
• Work with specialists from Data Science, AI research, software, data engineering, architecture, governance and assurance;
• Work with domain specialists such as Cyber, Safety, Environment and Naval Engineering
• Contribute across the development lifecycle, from early research and experimentation towards implementation and service delivery;Take an active role in your learning, seeking feedback and sharing knowledge with the team.

As a BMT graduate, you will be part of an exciting 2-year personal development programme that will equip you with the knowledge, skills, and experience that you will need to propel your career to the next level.

You will be paired with a mentor who will support your technical development within BMT and you will receive tailored training within our Data and AI team. You will also be paired with a friendly buddy to help with questions and ease your transition into work.

About You

You will have a degree, equivalent qualification or demonstrable experience in a discipline involving programming, data, quantitative analysis or scientific problem-solving, such as Data Science, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Physics or Economics. You'll have practical experience using Python for data or analytical projects and a foundation in data preparation, statistics, machine learning and AI principles. Just as importantly, you'll bring curiosity, integrity, adaptability and a genuine enthusiasm for continuous learning.

Whilst experience in Defence or consultancy is not required, you should be interested in working within regulated, high-consequence environments where quality, integrity and the responsible use of data and AI are essential. Experience with technologies such as SQL, Power Query, Git, cloud services, APIs, data pipelines, machine learning or generative AI would be advantageous but is not essential.
