Job summary

Arup is recruiting a Graduate Audiovisual & Theatre Design in Southampton. The role involves designing technical systems for theatres, venues and cultural spaces, from concept through to technical design, and working with clients, operators and other experts to deliver world‑class experiences.

The Opportunity

Arup is a leading theatre and venue design and advisory practice, and the creative team behind the design of many of the world’s most beloved cultural places. Our team works on venues for performance and visual art on a local and international scale. Our work includes theatres, concert halls, arenas, cinemas, museums and galleries, and music and film studios. We also work on audiovisual systems in offices, hotels, education, shopping centres and healthcare.

We design technical systems (stage machinery, lighting, video, audio, broadcast, digital infrastructure) and input to project vision and briefing, architectural design, operational space planning, auditorium design, and liaise with other experts to create world-class experiences. We work closely with our clients, public authorities, operators, architects, engineers and theatre staff, guiding projects from inception and planning, through design, testing and commissioning, as well as consulting on in-use operations.

  • Production lighting and lighting control systems
  • Audio-visual, broadcast and communications systems
  • Stage machinery and automation control systems
  • Venue planning and operational design, including back of house facilities and public spaces
  • Auditorium design and modelling, including sightline analysis
  • Visual arts strategies and cultural master-planning for cities and districts
  • Visualisation, naturalizations, and the development of new digital tools for design and communication

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop innovative solutions within constraints of project budgets
  • Undertake conceptual through to technical design
  • Participate in discussions with clients, relevant communities and other stakeholders
  • Undertake calculations, drawings and modelling of venue technical systems
  • Prepare presentations and technical documents for clear communication with design teams and users
  • Contribute to and review designs of other parties
  • Review systems onsite and assist with specialist venue systems inspection and commissioning.

For this opportunity, we are open to qualifications in any subject area. We would like to see your curiosity and passion for the arts, culture and entertainment sector.

  • You may have volunteer, amateur, or professional experience working in a performing arts venue, gallery, studio, museum, conference, or event environment.
  • You may have taken on technical, operation, curatorial, or visitor experience roles.
  • You may have an avid reader of industry news and publications and have a view on the future of arts and culture and / or audio-visual design.
  • You may have personal projects that have developed relevant technical, creative and/or design skills.
  • You may have reflections on your interactions with the arts, culture and entertainment sector that you’d like to apply to your design work.
