Job description

We are looking for a skilled Healthcare Assistant to become a part of our multi-site team. The HCA will be approachable and have excellent communication skills. We are searching for a dedicated, compassionate, and energetic individual who is a team player. The practices can be busy; therefore, good time management is key to this role. Also, a calm demeanour and the ability to work well under pressure are skills we are looking for.

An expectation to work weekdays and 4-6 Saturday mornings per year (with 1/2 day off in that week) is needed to assist the operating doctor (a weekday morning hours adjusted).

The purpose of the role is to assist the GPs and practice nurse team in the service and delivery of care management of the practice population.

The Group consists of a main site and branches. Candidates must be willing to work at all sites as and when required.

We are able to offer approximately 12 hours plus additional hours to support colleague holidays, etc.

Main duties of the job
  1. Undertake, record, and follow guidelines for tasks for which you have received appropriate training, such as:
  2. Pulse Rate And Rhythm
  3. Temperature
  4. Height And Weight - Body Mass Index (BMI)
  5. Basic dressings
  6. Flu vaccinations if trained (or training can be provided)
  7. ECG
  8. New patient checks
  9. Urinalysis
  10. Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during, and after patient care interventions
  11. Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted
  12. Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence

The Group practice consists of a main site and branches. Staff are expected to work across these sites.

We believe in general practice as a team (currently nearly 36 staff), where all members provide care.

Job responsibilities

It is important that the candidate has experience in phlebotomy, BP checks, and wound dressings as a minimum.

Experience working in a GP surgery or Accident & Emergency is an additional bonus.

Training in more advanced areas could be provided.

Undertake new patient health checks, diabetic checks including blood testing, foot checks, and health promotion referrals.

Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes.

Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately.

Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly.

Undertake wound care, dressings, and other clinical tasks as required.

Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics.

Carry out BMI checks as directed.

Act as a chaperone as required.

When trained, administer flu vaccinations.

Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation.

Provide support during minor operations as required.

Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session.

Ensure fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance.

Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy.

Able to carry out home visits a few times a year as required for flu vaccinations/reviews, etc.

Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate.

Carry out ECGs as requested.

Participate in practice IPC audit as directed by the Clinical IPC lead.

Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care.

Support and participate in shared learning within the practice.

Participate in Extended access service provision at the practice.

Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota.

We would also consider candidates doing Nurse Associate training as an HCA and support their progression.

Qualifications
  • Qualified in phlebotomy
  • Qualified to NVQ level 3
Experience
  • Experience in a Healthcare Assistant role in a primary care setting or A&E department
  • Experience working in a GP surgery
