Rayner is seeking a Medical Communications Director to lead the global medical and marketing communications function from our HQ in Worthing. You will translate clinical evidence into credible scientific messaging across channels, and manage the Marketing Communications Manager and broader team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver the global medical communications strategy across markets.
  • Create multi‑channel medical communication plans for congresses, publications, digital platforms, and trade media.
  • Lead the global KOL strategy and relationships with ophthalmology experts.
  • Plan and manage messaging at national and international congresses, including symposium strategy and events.
  • Lead development of peer‑reviewed publications with support from the clinical team.
  • Translate complex clinical data into clear, evidence‑based communications.
  • Collaborate with Clinical, Marketing, Regulatory, R&D, Sales and regional teams to align messaging.
  • Expand Rayner’s scientific profile through trade publications and industry engagement.
  • Manage medical communications projects ensuring timely, high‑quality content delivery.
  • Monitor emerging evidence and trends to strengthen leadership and support business objectives.
  • Set department objectives and provide coaching for Global Marketing Communications Manager and regional teams.
  • Oversee planning and delivery of marketing communications activities, including events, digital content, and internal comms, within budget.
  • Partner with the CMO and leadership to deliver a consistent Rayner voice worldwide.

Job description

The Medical Communications Director leads Rayner's global medical and marketing communications function. The role is responsible for developing and delivering Rayner's global medical communications strategy, ensuring clinical evidence is translated into clear, credible, and impactful scientific messaging across all channels, and has line management responsibility for the Marketing Communications Manager and the wider marketing communications team.

The role enhances Rayner's scientific leadership by driving publications, congress activities, key opinion leader engagement, and evidence-based communications that support healthcare professionals, business objectives, and patient outcomes. It also provides strategic and day-to-day leadership of the marketing communications team, ensuring brand messaging, campaigns, and event delivery are consistent, high-quality, and aligned with the wider scientific and commercial strategy.

The role is based out of our Global HQ in Worthing, West Sussex.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Develop and deliver the global medical communications strategy, ensuring scientific evidence is communicated consistently across all direct markets.
  • Create and execute multi-channel medical communication plans across congresses, publications, digital platforms, and trade media.
  • Lead the global Key Opinion Leader (KOL) strategy, building and maintaining strong relationships with leading ophthalmology experts.
  • Plan and manage Rayner's medical communications messaging at national and international congresses, including symposium strategy, scientific content, and event execution.
  • Lead the development of peer-reviewed publications, supporting manuscript preparation, data interpretation, and journal submissions. Supported by the wider clinical team.
  • Translate complex clinical data into clear, evidence-based communications tailored for internal and external audiences.
  • Collaborate with Clinical, Marketing, Regulatory, R&D, Sales, and regional teams to ensure aligned scientific messaging.
  • Expand Rayner's scientific profile through trade publications, industry engagement, and digital medical communications.
  • Manage medical communications projects, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality scientific content.
  • Monitor emerging clinical evidence and industry trends to strengthen Rayner's scientific leadership and support business objectives.
  • Set department objectives and provide line management, coaching, and development for the Global Marketing Communications Manager, the regional Medical Communication Managers and wider marketing communications team, setting clear objectives and building team capability.
  • Oversee planning and delivery of Rayner's marketing communications activities, including events and congresses, digital and social content, and internal communications, ensuring efficient use of budget and resource.
  • Act as a key partner to the Chief Marketing Officer and wider leadership team, integrating medical and marketing communications plans to deliver a consistent Rayner voice worldwide.
What Experience & Skills You Will Need:
  • 5-7 years of experience in medical/scientific communications, ideally within the ophthalmic industry, including experience operating at a global or multi-region level
  • Proven people leadership and line management experience, with a track record of building, coaching, and developing high-performing teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and communicate ophthalmic clinical data, with medical communications experience and strong presentation skills.
  • Experience overseeing marketing communications activities (campaigns, brand, events, digital/social) in addition to medical/scientific communications, either directly or through close cross-functional partnership.
  • Excellent English writing and communication skills
  • Self-driven, accountable, and a collaborative team player, capable of working independently and cross-functionally.
  • Strong project management expertise and a highly organised, timeline-driven, objectives-focused approach.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Proficiency in additional languages.
  • Experience within cataract surgery and premium intraocular lenses (IOLs).
