Job summary

Practice Plus Group is seeking a General Practitioner to join the primary care team at HMP Dovegate, a category B remand prison. The role includes reception, urgent same-day medication, duty doctor referrals, leavers' medication, and substance misuse withdrawal programmes, working with nurses and non-medical prescribers.

Responsibilities

• Respond to medical problems with diagnosis, investigation, treatment and referral in line with guidelines.
• Prescribe for patients, review medications and monitor repeats.
• Provide clinical assessment and timely management decisions.
• Cover reception and urgent same-day medication support.
• Handle duty doctor referrals.
• Manage leavers' medication and substance misuse withdrawal programmes.
• Provide medical leadership to the healthcare team.

Job description

General practitioner post in the primary care team at HMP Dovegate, a category B remand prison, run by Practice Plus Group. The role covers reception, same-day urgent medication, duty doctor referrals, leavers' medication and substance misuse withdrawal programmes, working alongside the nursing team and non-medical prescribers. The post runs 24 hours a week, one Saturday in three on a three-week rolling rota, with patients who have long-term and complex needs. GMC registration and a place on the GP Performers List are required, with additional vetting and security checks.

What the job involves

• Respond to medical problems with diagnosis, investigation, treatment and referral in line with guidelines
• Prescribe for patients, regularly review medications and monitor repeat prescriptions
• Provide clinical assessment and make timely decisions on future management
• Cover reception and urgent same-day medication support
• Handle duty doctor referrals
• Manage leavers' medication
• Work on substance misuse withdrawal programmes
• Provide medical leadership and expert advice to the wider healthcare team, working closely with nursing staff and non-medical prescribers
• Undertake clinical audit and clinical governance activities
• Undertake clinical risk assessments and implement management strategies
• Promote multidisciplinary discussion of complex case management, including results, letters and tasks
• Share knowledge through development sessions, governance meetings and case reviews

What’s required

Qualifications

• MBChB or MBBS
• RCGP Certificate in Substance Misuse 1 and 2, or readiness to undertake them

Registration & licences

• GMC registration
• Inclusion on the GP Performers List

Experience

• Experience working as a GP in community general practice

Skills & knowledge

• Ability to work with patients who have a history of substance misuse
