Job summary

Amey Ltd. in Yarm (HMP Kirklevington Grange) is seeking a permanent General Building Engineer to maintain essential building, fire safety and security systems within a prison setting.

You will perform planned inspections and tests, including fire extinguishers, extinguishing systems, emergency lighting and CCTV/alarm upkeep. The role requires practical maintenance experience, familiarity with fire alarm systems, and a proactive, safety-focused mindset.

Qualifications

• Practical experience of general building maintenance and compliance activities.
• Experience of fire door and fire extinguisher maintenance.
• Experience of emergency lighting, residual current device testing and water temperature testing.
• Familiarity with fire alarm systems and their core points.
• Good IT skills and the ability to maintain accurate electronic records.
• A proactive, safety-focused and collaborative approach to work.

Responsibilities

• Maintain essential building, fire safety and security systems to support a safe and compliant prison environment.
• Complete planned checks and testing of fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, fire hoses, smoke vents and emergency lighting.
• Carry out fire door maintenance and checks on misting units.
• Complete residual current device testing and water temperature checks in accordance with site requirements.
• Undertake general tasks associated with CCTV and alarm systems.
• Raise, update and close remedial work through the Computer Aided Facilities Management system, maintaining clear and accurate records.
