Job summary

SGN in Edinburgh is seeking a Trainee Gas Engineer Assistant. You will learn on the job, supporting engineers with gas service and mains repair tasks while receiving full training and equipment. No prior experience is required as you start a career in a critical safety role.

The position involves on-site work in Edinburgh, with standby and overtime opportunities and a clear path to progression as you qualify further. A valid UK driving licence and being able to pass a face fit test are preferred.

Responsibilities

• Support engineers on site during gas service and mains repair activities.
• Assist with excavation and laying/repair of gas pipes in outdoor environments.
• Maintain SGN vans and tools; ensure team has equipment for safe work.
• Respond to standby and overtime duties to keep gas supply running.

Salary: £29,327 per annum (increase to £32,586 upon successful completion of probationary period)

You will be given all training and equipment to support our Engineers in repairing, replacing, and laying new gas mains and services. With no prior experience needed, we will provide everything to fully equip you with the tools and knowledge to keep our customers safe and warm.

How you’ll support us on our mission to keep people safe and warm…

• Support engineers on site and learn from them daily during gas service and mains repair activities
• Excavation, digging in public and private highways, laying and repairing gas pipes in various outdoor environments safely as part of a team
• Being part of essential works to keep gas supply running to millions of people all year around and at any time day or night – standby and overtime opportunities apply for irregular hours
• You will maintain the SGN vans and tools before and after each job, ensuring your team has all the equipment to do your job safely and efficiently

This is for personal protection to ensure you don’t breathe in any harmful substances, whilst carrying out critical work within our communities.
• Holds a valid UK driver’s licence: A full, valid UK driver’s licence is essential for this role.

Due to operational response times, you must be based within a commutable distance from the desired locations.
