Job description

An opportunity has become available for a Gardener (Part-Time) to maintain 3-acres of formal gardens on a wonderful and varied estate, which is surrounded by woodland in Cobham, Surrey. The property owners take a keen interest in their gardens and as such they are kept to a high horticultural standard. The Part-Time Gardener position is offered 3 days per week, on a self-employed or PAYE basis.

With a large patio surrounding the house, the gardens are made up of several sections, coming together naturally to create an inspiring environment. There are beautiful herbaceous borders and shrubs throughout, and a small orchard containing 12 apple and pear trees, and 4 young cherry trees, to be pruned as necessary. A beautiful wisteria covers a Victorian wall on the property, and a formal parterre is made up of 12 Buxus beds surrounding a beautiful centre piece. Additionally, there is a swimming pool and tennis court on site, which will need clearing of leaves as required.

Laurel and yew hedging flows throughout the gardens, and formal hedge cutting will be required. There is a greenhouse on site, with the potential for the future development of a vegetable garden if desired. The property boasts a well-equipped tool shed, and so the successful candidate should be well-versed in the use of a variety of equipment, with the ability to maintain these between services. A thorough understanding of lawn care is essential, inclusive of manual mowing and techniques such as scarifying, aerating and top dressing, to ensure high standards are maintained across the estate.

Applicants should have extensive horticultural experience in a similar setting, with excellent plant knowledge and the ability to identify and manage pests and diseases. Candidates will be flexible, physically fit and comfortable being outdoors in all weathers, with the ability to work collaboratively with property owners to produce exceptional results.

The successful applicant should be self-motivated and comfortable working alone, with the ability to plan and manage their time effectively, through the seasons. PA1/6 Spraying certificates are desirable and candidates should live within commuting distance of the vacancy, with a full driving licence and their own transport, due to the rural location of the property. References will be requested at offer stage.

The working hours for the position are 8 hours per day, 3 days a week, totalling 24 hours per week. The position is advertised at a self-employed hourly rate, or PAYE dependent on the candidate’s preference.

SALARY: £22.50-£25/hour for self-employed OR £21,000/year (£36,000 pro rata)
