Job summary

Qualifications

• A horticultural or relevant professional qualification preferred, or substantial equivalent experience.

• Good written and verbal communication with residents.

Responsibilities

• Mow lawns, strim edges, prune shrubs and weed beds.
• Plant and maintain soft landscaping across estates.

• Assist with general cleaning, caretaking, and grounds maintenance as required.

Job description

The City of London Corporation is looking for an experienced and motivated Gardener to help maintain gardens and open green spaces across its housing estates to a high standard. This is a practical, resident-focused role that supports the enjoyment, recreation and safety of residents and visitors.

Working as part of a local estate team, you will complete scheduled and reactive gardening tasks, including grass cutting, strimming, pruning, weeding, planting and soft landscaping. You will also use and carry out routine maintenance of horticultural tools and machinery, report defects and estate issues, and help ensure safe working practices are followed.

At quieter times of the gardening year, you may be asked by the Estate Supervisor to support colleagues with general cleaning, caretaking, grounds maintenance, bulk waste collection and scheduled deep-cleaning tasks. You will also provide a courteous and helpful service to residents and contractors.

About you

You will need

• a horticultural or other relevant professional qualification (preferred), or substantial equivalent professional experience
• substantial professional experience of gardening or grounds maintenance to a high standard
• experience of safely using horticultural machinery, such as lawnmowers, strimmers and hedge cutters, including identifying and resolving minor faults
• good knowledge of health and safety in gardening and grounds maintenance, including safe use of equipment, chemicals and manual handling
• good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and residents
• a flexible, self-motivated approach, with the ability to work as part of a team and on your own initiative
• basic IT skills, including the use of mobile devices and email
• an understanding of the needs of social housing residents and a commitment to providing a professional service.

Working arrangements

The working days are Monday to Friday 8am-4pm with a 1-hour break. The role is physically demanding and involves regular outdoor work throughout the year in a range of weather conditions. It also requires lone working for periods of time.
