Job summary

Hillier Garden Centre in Horsham seeks a committed Cook to prepare and deliver high‑quality meals in our on‑site restaurant. You’ll ensure fresh dishes, safety, cleanliness and consistent service, working with front‑of‑house colleagues to create a seamless customer experience.

The role is full‑time, 37.5 hours per week, on a rota with some weekend work. Salary is up to £13.38 per hour, dependent on experience.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a cook or similar food prep role.
• Strong knowledge of food safety and hygiene practices.
• Good communication and teamwork abilities.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage busy periods.
• Well organised with multitasking capability.
• Experience in a cafe/restaurant within a garden centre or retail.
• Food hygiene certification (Level 2).
• Sociable daytime hours with no split shifts.

Responsibilities

• Uphold Hillier standards of service, appearance and engagement.
• Prepare and cook dishes to company specification and timely service.
• Cater for dietary requirements while following procedures.
• Oversee daily kitchen operations, prep, cleaning and equipment.
• Store, rotate stock, manage inventory and assist with orders.
• Maintain portion control and minimise waste.
• Ensure food safety regulations are followed and documented.
• Follow health and safety policies and use protective equipment.
• Collaborate with front‑of‑house staff for a smooth experience.
• Respond to customer feedback or dietary requests promptly.
• Present food consistently to specification.
• Support and train other kitchen staff as needed.
• Identify and report hazards to ensure safety.
• Carry out other reasonable tasks to support the business.
