Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority is seeking a Computational Scientist to develop advanced computational tools that support world-leading fusion energy research. You will apply scientific computing and numerical methods to plasma modelling challenges and contribute to FreeGSNKE development and SUNRISE workflows.

Onsite role with flexible working options, salary £43,702 with a generous pension and benefits; collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, mentor students, and publish findings.

Qualifications

• Degree in a scientific, engineering or technical discipline, plus a PhD or equivalent research experience.
• Experience with at least one modern language for scientific computing (C++, Fortran, Python or Julia).
• Familiarity with software engineering practices, including testing, version control and code maintenance.
• Experience writing efficient, maintainable software independently.
• Knowledge of numerical methods used in simulation of physical systems.
• Experience applying computational or scientific computing techniques to research or engineering problems.
• Experience working in a Unix or Linux environment.

Responsibilities

• Apply computational and numerical methods to solve scientific research challenges.
• Develop robust, maintainable software for modelling tokamak plasma behaviour.
• Collaborate with technical specialists to deliver modelling and simulation solutions.
• Select and apply appropriate computational approaches to achieve project outcomes.
• Produce technical reports, documentation and contributions to scientific publications.
• Present research findings and outputs at internal workshops and forums.
• Identify opportunities to apply specialist expertise to new research challenges.
• Support and mentor students, graduates or apprentices on technical work.
• Develop and maintain FreeGSNKE’s Python codebase and performance improvements.
• Contribute to JAX-based FreeGSNKE development, including GPU-enabled workflows.
