Job summary

UKAEA is seeking a Principal HPC Computational Engineer to lead development and maintenance of software for nuclear and multiphysics applications. You will drive research, funding operations, and collaborations while managing projects and teams in a UNIX environment.

The role requires a doctorate and an international reputation, with experience in C/C++/Fortran/C/Rust, Python/Julia scripting, and MPI/OpenMP. Onsite presence is expected at Culham, Oxfordshire.

Qualifications

• Doctorate in computational, mathematical or physical science.
• International reputation in research or industry.
• Experience with compiled languages (C++, Fortran, C, Rust) and scripting (Julia, Python) in UNIX.
• Experience in agile project and budget management.

Responsibilities

• Lead R&D activities for novel numerical techniques and world-leading codes.
• Manage small/medium teams (4–10) across projects and build capability.
• Drive research funding and industry/university partnerships.
• Represent UKAEA nationally/internationally and evolve codes for large-scale systems.
• Publish results and lead simulation efforts across programmes.
