Job description

Morson Edge Finance is partnering with a rapidly growing and ambitious business to recruit a Fund Controller into its Newcastle City Centre operation.

This is a particularly unusual opportunity within the Northeast market, offering exposure to a sophisticated global investment environment and the opportunity to work alongside exceptionally talented professionals across a broad range of specialist functions.

The organisation has experienced significant growth and has ambitious plans for its continued development. It has deliberately built an environment centred around attracting high calibre people, intellectual curiosity and exceptional standards, while offering levels of professional exposure that can be difficult to find within the regional finance market.

For someone looking to build a career within investments and financial markets, this represents an opportunity to gain significant exposure and responsibility while remaining based in Newcastle.

The role

Working as part of a specialist team, you will support the effective control and accurate reporting of investment performance, portfolio valuations and Net Asset Value (NAV) across a diverse investment portfolio.

The role offers exposure to a broad range of asset classes including Rates, Equities, Credit, Commodities, Energy, Mortgages and FX.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Producing accurate daily P&L reporting, including analysis across asset class, strategy, time periods and risk attribution.
  • Taking ownership of daily P&L and ensuring reporting is completed accurately within defined deadlines.
  • Performing valuation testing against independent pricing data to support the accurate valuation of investment portfolios.
  • Producing NAV reporting, including the review of management and performance fees.
  • Working collaboratively with a broad range of finance, investment and other specialist stakeholders across the organisation.
  • Investigating and understanding movements, discrepancies and underlying drivers rather than simply producing the numbers.
  • Supporting wider projects and taking on increasing responsibility as experience within the role develops.
What we’re looking for

The organisation maintains exceptionally high standards when recruiting, and the academic and professional requirements for this position are important selection criteria.

Candidates must be ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified and should come from one of the following backgrounds:

  • 1+ years’ experience within Product Control, Fund Control, Investment Control or Valuations, gained within an investment bank, hedge fund, asset manager or other buy-side organisation; or
  • Approximately three years’ experience within a Big Four Accountancy firm. Candidates from a Top 10 firm may also be considered.
  • A qualified actuary may also potentially be considered.

Candidates must also demonstrate the following so please ensure all relevant information is on your CV or you may be declined. These are non-negotiable requirements:

  • Strong academics, including 3 As at A Level. Maths, Science and facilitated/ traditional academic subjects are preferred.
  • A minimum 2:1 degree from a Russell Group university or equivalent.
  • Strong Excel capability.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
  • Genuine intellectual curiosity and a desire to understand the reasons behind the numbers rather than simply completing a process.
  • The confidence and communication skills to work effectively with highly knowledgeable stakeholders.
  • A positive, collaborative approach and the motivation to succeed within a demanding, high performance environment.

Knowledge of financial products such as Bonds, Equities and simple derivatives would be advantageous, as would familiarity with SQL, Python or Tableau.

Why consider the opportunity?

This is not a traditional finance role within a large corporate environment.

The organisation places significant emphasis on intellectual capability, curiosity and individual ownership. People are trusted to take responsibility early, encouraged to ask questions and expected to understand the underlying business rationale rather than simply follow established processes. The successful candidate will work alongside exceptionally talented colleagues within an intellectually stimulating environment where the work is frequently influenced by financial markets, global economic developments and world events.

There is also significant opportunity to learn from experienced specialists, develop a deeper understanding of how investment markets operate and gain exposure that would ordinarily be associated with roles based in much larger financial centres. The culture is fast-paced, ambitious and collaborative. The business looks for people who are positive, passionate and highly motivated, who enjoy solving complex problems and who continually want to learn and develop.

It also pays very competitively for the Northeast market and has successfully attracted professionals into Newcastle from elsewhere in the UK and internationally. For someone currently considering whether they need to move to London to develop a career within this area, this opportunity offers a particularly compelling alternative.

Package & working pattern

Salary: £55K-£65K for candidates qualifying from practice, with scope up to approximately £80K-£85Kfor candidates bringing stronger directly relevant and/or post-qualified experience. + Benefits package.

This position is based on site 5 days a week.

Relocating to Newcastle

For candidates currently based outside the Northeast, Newcastle itself forms an important part of the opportunity. The city offers a significantly lower cost of living than London and many other major UK locations, while providing an excellent restaurant, bar, nightlife and cultural scene alongside easy access to the coast and countryside.

The organisation has already been successful in attracting people to relocate to Newcastle, helped by the combination of strong regional salaries, challenging career opportunities and the lifestyle available in the Northeast.

Its city centre location also makes the office easily accessible by public transport, with Metro, bus and rail connections nearby.

**You must be resident in the UK. Please note that this opportunity cannot support candidates who require visa sponsorship.**
