Job summary

DC Thomson is seeking a curious Software Engineer to build scalable customer engagement systems across a hybrid London/Dundee environment. The role covers front-end and back-end development, data flows and API design, using React, Node.js, GraphQL and modern databases.

You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, optimize data pipelines and explore AI-enabled tooling to enhance product experiences for audiences across DC Thomson’s media and subscription brands.

Qualifications

• Commercial experience developing software within modern engineering environments.
• Strong experience building full stack applications using React and Node.js.
• Hands-on experience developing and maintaining modern web applications using JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Experience designing, building and consuming APIs, including GraphQL.
• Experience working with at least one relational database technology (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server).
• Experience developing, integrating and maintaining backend services, APIs and data-driven applications.
• Knowledge of software architecture, design patterns and engineering best practices.
• Experience with source control, automated testing and CI/CD approaches.
• Understanding of secure coding, software quality and operational reliability.

Responsibilities

• Designing, developing and maintaining software applications, services and integrations across our customer engagement ecosystem.
• Building and enhancing personalised customer experiences and profiling capabilities.
• Developing and supporting backend systems that manage customer data flows between platforms and services.
• Working with Iterable to deliver scalable and effective email and customer communication solutions.
• Collaborating with product, engineering and business teams to understand requirements and deliver valuable technical solutions.
• Troubleshooting, diagnosing and resolving software and system issues.
• Contributing to engineering best practices, automation, code quality and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Participating in code reviews and knowledge-sharing activities across the wider engineering community.
• Exploring opportunities to leverage AI-powered tools and emerging technologies to improve engineering effectiveness and customer outcomes.
