Role Overview
The role involves efficiently allocating resources to ensure the safe, timely, and budget-compliant delivery of Colas Rail Freight services. This includes adhering to Colas Rail Freight rostering guidelines, staff Terms and Conditions, and customer requirements, including those of commercial clients and the Network Rail Supply Chain Operations. The responsibilities include creating and managing staff rosters from inception to delivery, collaborating closely with Freight Delivery Managers daily, and acting as the main contact for drivers and ground staff within the respective region.
Person Specification
- Knowledge and experience in general rostering and planning
- Strong background in managing operational workforce and creating staff rosters for variable shift patterns
- Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills
- Proactive and pragmatic approach
- Proficient in Microsoft Office; experienced with Network Rail Online Logistics (NROL), Train Running System (TRSUT), and TOPS (TRSUT)
- Attention to detail with a problem-solving mindset
- Assertive and confident in resolving rostering issues
- Understanding of staff fatigue considerations in rostering
- Knowledge of operational staff terms and conditions
- Ability to make tough decisions in challenging situations to ensure safety, cost-effectiveness, and customer satisfaction
- Good geographical knowledge of the UK railway network
- Clear and concise communication skills at all levels
- Knowledge of rules and regulations relevant to freight operations
- Team player capable of delivering under demanding circumstances
- Confidence in dealing with all Colas Rail customers to meet expectations within required timescales and quality standards
- Holder of a full UK driving licence
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure all rosters are accurate and of high quality
- Manage and own rosters from creation through amendments or cancellations, including sickness, in collaboration with Delivery Managers
- Hand over weekly rosters to Control and Delivery Managers at T-1
- Support short-notice changes and sickness-related adjustments in coordination with Operations Control and Delivery Managers
- Report daily tasks to the Delivery Manager and work under their guidance
- Coordinate with Delivery Managers regarding resource planning and route learning, including maintaining route and traction knowledge for upcoming works as per the T-29 job allocation sheet
- Monitor and implement revisions and late changes promptly, with support from Operations Control and Delivery Managers
- Collaborate with Business Managers, Planning, and SCO possession planners for work acceptance
- Provide cross-cover for resource planners during leave, sickness, or other company requirements
