Job summary

SILA Linguists is seeking freelance Nepali interpreters and translators for healthcare, social care, legal and community assignments in the UK.

You may work remote by video or telephone or on-site at client premises; confidentiality and accuracy are essential. DBS check may be required for assignments in healthcare or with vulnerable people, and you’ll build glossaries for the sectors you work in.

Qualifications

• Excellent spoken and written Nepali and English, with the ability to switch register for different clients.
• The DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting), DPI (Diploma in Police Interpreting) or an equivalent qualification is an advantage; CIOL or ITI membership is welcome.
• Gurung, Magar, Rai, Limbu or Hindi is an advantage.
• Willingness to complete a DBS check for assignments in healthcare, education or with vulnerable people.
• Right to work in the UK if you will take on-site assignments in the UK.
• A reliable internet connection, headset and quiet, private workspace for remote assignments.

Responsibilities

• Interpret for older Nepali speakers in health and care settings using appropriate honorifics.
• Translate health and council information into clear Nepali in Devanagari script.
• Keep everything you hear and read on assignments strictly confidential, and remain impartial throughout.
• Build and maintain glossaries for the sectors you work in.
• Deliver written translations that are accurate, complete and proofread, on or before the agreed deadline.
• Work remotely by video or telephone, or on site at the client's premises, arriving prepared and on time.
• Produce accurate transcripts and English translations of recorded Nepali speech.

Job description

SILA Linguists® needs freelance Nepali interpreters and translators for healthcare, social care, legal and community assignments. Work can involve older members of Gurkha families.

Nepali is also known as Nepalese. Nepali speakers in the UK include Gurkha veterans and their families, including older people who came to the UK later in life and use little English. Some clients also speak Gurung, Magar, Rai or Limbu, and respectful forms of address matter in Nepali, especially with older clients.

Common assignments include GP and hospital care, adult social care assessments, pension and benefits matters, and housing. Translators work on health information, letters and certificates written in Devanagari.
