Job summary

SILA Linguists is seeking freelance Hindi interpreters and translators for healthcare, legal, immigration and business work across the UK. Roles include spoken interpreting and Devanagari translation, with mixed remote and on-site assignments.

Ideal candidates are native or near-native in Hindi and English, with a recognised qualification (DPSI/DPI or equivalent) and DBS check. Flexible schedule and varied assignments across sectors are offered.

Qualifications

• Native or near-native fluency in Hindi and English, spoken and written.
• Recognised interpreting or translation qualification or equivalent experience.
• Reading and writing Devanagari; Urdu or Punjabi language skills are an advantage.
• Current DBS check or willingness to obtain one for certain assignments.
• Right to work in the UK for on-site and remote assignments.

Responsibilities

• Interpret in Hindi using formal or everyday vocabulary to suit the client.
• Translate documents in Devanagari script for immigration, education and business use.
• Interpret accurately and impartially, keeping information confidential.
• Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, especially medical and legal.
• Translate and proofread documents, query unclear text rather than guess.
• Attend video and telephone assignments from a quiet, private space with reliable connectivity.
• Transcribe and translate audio/video recordings if you have transcription skills.

Job description

SILA Linguists® is looking for freelance Hindi interpreters and translators for healthcare, legal, immigration and business assignments. Both spoken interpreting and Devanagari translation are needed.

Hindi is spoken by Indian communities across the UK and is often used as a shared language by people whose first language is another Indian language. Spoken Hindi and Urdu are close, but formal vocabulary differs and Hindi is written in Devanagari. Many clients mix Hindi and English, and interpreters should make sure meaning is fully understood rather than assume it.

Requests include GP and hospital appointments, maternity care, immigration matters, employment cases and business meetings. Translators work on certificates, academic records and commercial documents.

Responsibilities

• Interpret in Hindi using formal or everyday vocabulary to suit the client.
• Translate documents in Devanagari script for immigration, education and business use.
• Interpret accurately and impartially, following the professional code of conduct and keeping all information confidential.
• Research subject-specific vocabulary before assignments, particularly for medical and legal bookings.
• Translate and proofread documents carefully, querying unclear source text rather than guessing.
• Attend video and telephone assignments from a quiet, private space with a reliable connection.
• Transcribe and translate audio and video recordings, such as interviews and calls, if you have the skills for transcription work.

Requirements

• Native or near-native fluency in Hindi and English, spoken and written.
• A recognised interpreting or translation qualification, such as the DPSI or DPI, or equivalent experience. Membership of CIOL, ITI or NRPSI is welcome but not required.
• Reading and writing in Devanagari; Urdu, Punjabi or another Indian language is an advantage.
• A current DBS check, or willingness to obtain one, for assignments that require it.
• The right to work in the UK for on-site UK assignments.
• A dependable internet connection and a confidential space for remote interpreting.
