Job summary

SILA Linguists is seeking freelance Telugu interpreters and translators for healthcare, immigration, legal, and family assignments across the UK. Remote work by video or telephone is available, with on-site bookings at client premises as needed.

Applicants should have excellent Telugu and English, willingness to complete a DBS check for healthcare or vulnerable settings, and rights to work in the UK. Regional Telugu variations may influence assignments.

Qualifications

• Excellent spoken and written Telugu and English; ability to switch register for different clients.
• DPSI or equivalent qualification is advantageous; CIOL or ITI membership welcome.

Responsibilities

• Interpret for Telugu speakers in health and family settings, including relatives with limited English.
• Translate Telugu certificates and records for immigration and education purposes.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality on assignments.
• Build and maintain glossaries for the sectors you work in.
• Deliver accurate translations on or before deadlines.
• Work remotely by video or telephone, or on-site at the client’s premises, arriving prepared and on time.
• Produce transcripts and English translations of Telugu speech, e.g., police interviews or research recordings.

Job description

SILA Linguists® is recruiting freelance Telugu interpreters and translators for healthcare, immigration, legal and family assignments. Work is available remotely and on site.

Telugu is spoken in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and many UK Telugu speakers work in IT, engineering and healthcare or study at UK universities. Requests often involve family members, such as parents visiting from India or spouses, who are more comfortable in Telugu. Regional differences between coastal Andhra, Rayalaseema and Telangana speech can matter.

Assignments include GP and hospital appointments, maternity care, immigration matters and family proceedings. Translators work on certificates, educational records and legal documents in Telugu script.

Responsibilities

• Interpret for Telugu speakers in health and family settings, including relatives with limited English.
• Translate Telugu certificates and records for immigration and education purposes.
• Keep everything you hear and read on assignments strictly confidential, and remain impartial throughout.
• Build and maintain your own glossaries for the sectors you work in.
• Deliver written translations that are accurate, complete and proofread, on or before the agreed deadline.
• Work remotely by video or telephone, or on site at the client's premises, arriving prepared and on time.
• Produce accurate transcripts and English translations of recorded Telugu speech, for example police interviews or research recordings.

Requirements

• Excellent spoken and written Telugu and English, with the ability to switch register for different clients.
• The DPSI (Diploma in Public Service Interpreting), DPI (Diploma in Police Interpreting) or an equivalent qualification is an advantage; CIOL or ITI membership is welcome.
• Reading and writing in Telugu script.
• Willingness to complete a DBS check for assignments in healthcare, education or with vulnerable people.
• Right to work in the UK if you will take on-site assignments in the UK.
• A reliable internet connection, headset and quiet, private workspace for remote assignments.
