About the team
The successful candidate will be joining the Fleet function, a small multi-disciplinary team that supports corporate and project governance, risk management and audits of Train Operating Companies, suppliers and internal Porterbrook processes. The team is part of the Operations Directorate reporting to the Chief Operating Officer
Responsibilities
Safe Operation of Porterbrook-Owned Rolling Stock
- Ensure vehicles are suitable for safe operation on the railway system, with due consideration to Porterbrook’s lease obligations
- Review National Incident Reports identified as affecting applicable rolling stock and coordinate the implementation of remedial actions as necessary
- Manage and optimise maintenance specifications to ensure that no undue risk is imported on to the running railway to enhance Reliability and Maintainability.
- Support the delivery of unit modifications and enhancement projects
Maintenance
- Monitor Operator responsible maintenance; ensure mandated activities are carried out in time and to the correct standard
- Support the delivery of maintenance contracts as required
- Monitor suppliers to ensure compliance with defined contractual requirements
- Monitor quality of engineering activities at suppliers’ and contractors’ sites, ensuring that the requirements of both Porterbrook and customers are met
- Support the Porterbrook audit plan advising and developing scope for audits as required, manage closure of Corrective Action Requests
- Support and monitor condition of Porterbrook rolling stock assets, provide condition reports to the Operator and inform the Fleet Asset Manager of any issues identified
- Provide support to the Fleet Asset Manager in contract negotiations as required
- Actively manage the engineering change process between Porterbrook, customers and suppliers
Enhanced Fleet Support Responsibilities
- Actively lead reliability investigations and fleet performance enhancement workstreams to improve the reliability and future leasing opportunities
- Undertake and support appropriate technical investigations into areas of poor reliability and develop appropriate remedial actions
- Actively utilise Remote Condition Monitoring when fitted to the fleet to support Reliability, Availability and Maintainability
- Development of business cases and implementation plans supporting any proposed vehicle modifications and services.
- Proactively engage with the Porterbrook innovations team and external suppliers to seek out new technology to enhance fleet performance
- To be the Porterbrook representative within the customer fleet operation liaising with representative at all levels equally
Other Duties
- Deputise for Fleet Asset Manager as directed
- Support Commercial Manager in dealing with fleet maintenance, engineering and technical issues
- Assist in providing general engineering services to the company as and when required
Skills and Experience
General Requirements:
General requirements are for an engineer with a rail background, who can deal with customers and contractors in a commercial environment, having in depth knowledge of a particular fleet of vehicles relating to the Fleet Team
Qualifications
- Railway engineering knowledge, ideally possessing or working towards Chartered Status
- Degree, HNC or equivalent in an Engineering discipline
- Engineering apprenticeship
Knowledge
- Knowledge of railway industry rolling stock, organisation and rail stakeholders
- Basic knowledge of contractual obligations and operating lease agreements
- Awareness of safety cases, certification issues, railway risks and group standards
- Ability to understand and comment upon engineering instructions and drawings
- Knowledge and understanding of vehicle maintenance and overhaul requirements
