Job description

Report to: Head of Fleet and Road Safety

Location: UK or International

Our primary duty is to serve people affected by conflict, clearing landmines and the explosive remnants of war that threaten lives and livelihoods long after fighting has finished. We make land safe where war has ended, while also assisting those affected by active conflict and endemic violence. HALO addresses human suffering caused by armed violence in some of the world's most fragile places, securing weapons and ammunition and working with both state and community actors to reduce the prevalence of armed violence.

About The Role

This role focuses on developing and embedding best-in-class fleet safety practices across HALO's operations. It offers the opportunity to directly improve road safety outcomes through training, auditing and digital innovation, while supporting the professional development of fleet teams globally. To support the improvement and implementation of safe fleet operations across HALO's global programmes. This includes training, auditing, investigation, and policy guidance in line with international best practice.

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the Head of Fleet and Road Safety in all global fleet safety initiatives
  • Develop HALO's driver education programme to promote safe, defensive and eco driving practices
  • Deliver train-the-trainer driver training courses to programme teams
  • Investigate road traffic collisions, incidents and near-misses. Provide reports and preventative measures
  • Conduct audits of drivers, vehicles, workshops, and spare parts stores
  • Support programmes in analysing vehicle tracking data to monitor driving behaviour
  • Act as a champion for fleet safety and promote HALO's global road safety campaign
  • Collaborate with the Information Systems team on the development of digital fleet solutions
  • Make recommendations on risk mitigation for vehicle operations
  • Coordinate with HR and Training teams on fleet training materials and standards


General:

  • Uphold HALO's core values and standards, promoting its ethos and mission statement
  • Ensure familiarity with and adherence to all HALO policies and procedures, especially the code of conduct and safeguarding

Internal: Head of Fleet and Road Safety, Programme Logistics Teams, Training Team, HR, Information Systems Team.

External: Driving assessors, road safety authorities, vehicle tracking providers.

Requirements


Essential:

  • Demonstrated experience in Fleet Management, Logistics, or Safety Compliance
  • Comprehensive knowledge and practical experience in a relevant role
  • Willing to obtain advanced driving qualifications
  • Experience using vehicle tracking and fleet management systems
  • Familiarity with vehicle maintenance and inspection procedures
  • Proven history and/or background in delivering training
  • Experience conducting safety audits and risk assessments
  • Ability to work cross-culturally and influence remote teams
  • Good ICT skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Strong written and spoken English
  • Full driving license, willing to obtain heavy goods vehicles
  • Willingness and ability to travel to HALO programmes and projects


Desirable:

  • Experience working for INGO's
  • Experience working internationally
  • Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Road Haulage
  • Automotive engineering qualifications
  • Certificate of Professional Competence in road haulage transport manager


Physical requirements of role:

The role may require travel to operational sites and includes physical assessments and driving activities.

Travel requirements:

Availability for extended periods in operational locations as needed.
