Job Description

With continued success and business growth, Wincanton has the opportunity for a Shift Manager to join our team to meet the department KPI requirements in accordance with Company procedures and quality specifications, in order to meet Company standards and Customer requirements.

This role is working mornings and afternoons.

How will you contribute?

  • Ensure the operation meets all requirements, completing each function to the highest quality standards.
  • Be responsible for the health and safety of yourself and your colleagues by ensuring tasks are carried out to the relevant procedures.
  • Maintain personal hygiene and appearance to acceptable standards at all times.
  • Maintain and promote both the company and customer site culture and values.
  • Embrace all Wincanton and customer initiatives – ISO, Quality / people processes, One Planet living, etc.
  • Ensure a high level of communication between colleagues and management is maintained, and information flow is of the highest standard.
  • Raise any problems or queries with your immediate line manager in the first instance.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) where appropriate at all times.
  • Carry out any other reasonable request within the scope of the position.
  • Achieve maximum stock availability, order accuracy, and manage all contractual targets to ensure they are achieved or improved on.
  • Brief the team at the beginning of each shift to ensure all colleagues are fully communicated with about work patterns and site.
  • Manage staffing levels for the operation as required.
  • Be proactive in preventing accidents and reducing hazards by ensuring that company policy, standards of housekeeping, and safe working are followed at all times.
  • Monitor and continually improve standards of performance and quality within the operation.
  • Identify areas for cost saving and develop effective solutions to realize them.
  • Work to and exceed KPI and operational target expectations at every opportunity. Ensure the warehouse operates to budget, managing the function within agreed costs and account variances as required by the site manager.
  • Plan and manage operation resources to optimize the utilization of labor and equipment, achieving optimum unit cost.
  • Ensure that all warehouse mechanical handling equipment (MHE) and plant equipment are properly maintained to manufacturers' recommended standards and operated/used within company policy and health and safety requirements at all times.
  • Be responsible for the weekly and periodical operational planning requirements in line with the forecast.
  • Report any serious deviation from the plan quickly and accurately.
  • Ensure the induction, training, and development of all team members, keeping accurate records updated.
  • Manage all levels of discipline up to and including dismissal.
  • Manage absence and holiday to ensure service levels are met.
  • Provide coaching and development of all within the department to facilitate personal and professional growth, enabling individuals to develop their full potential.
  • Ensure that the company's health and safety levels are adhered to.
  • Interface with the customer, internal and external, on operational issues in a professional manner.
  • Ensure jobs are carried out by the most cost-effective and efficient means.
  • Work closely with the transport operation and national planning to ensure vehicle utilization is maximized at all times and service levels are adhered to.
  • Work with the transport team regarding yard management to ensure close operations with the appointed driver/shunter activity.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation within the warehouse, working closely with other departments to ensure operational crossover areas are managed collectively and with a focus on operational excellence.
  • Manage, motivate, and develop the site team through training and appraisals.
  • Challenge the status quo – processes, procedures, and operating methods.
  • Ensure the smooth flow of operations and carry out all other reasonable requests.
