Job summary

Hall& Kay Fire Engineering in Birmingham seeks a multi-disciplined Fire & Security Service Engineer to service, maintain, install and configure fire alarm and integrated security systems across the Midlands.

You will work to BS5839 standards, perform PPM and reactive maintenance, respond to callouts, and document activities. Training is provided, along with a company van and fuel card, plus pension and health benefits.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in maintenance of fire alarm systems (addressable and conventional).
• Strong knowledge of BS5839 standards and regulatory practices.
• Experience installing, configuring and commissioning CCTV, access control and intrusion systems.
• Willingness to participate in a UK on-call rota with standby payments.

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and versatile Multi-Disciplined Fire & Security Service Engineer to join our Birmingham team, serving clients across the Midlands region. This is an exceptional opportunity to develop and progress your career within the fire and security engineering sector, working with the latest technologies across both disciplines.

In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for the service, planned preventative maintenance (PPM), installation, configuration, and technical support of fire alarm systems and integrated security systems, ensuring our clients across the North receive exceptional technical service and system reliability.

You will receive comprehensive training on our range of products through our chosen manufacturers, industry-recognised training courses, and our in-house product training facility, supporting your continuous professional development.

Fire Alarm Systems:

• Conduct servicing, PPM, and technical support on fire alarm systems including addressable and conventional panels across the North region
• Perform routine maintenance, testing, and fault diagnosis on fire detection and alarm systems to ensure compliance with BS5839 standards
• Commission fire alarm systems and carry out statutory inspections and compliance checks
• Respond to emergency callouts and provide reactive maintenance support
• Maintain detailed service records, certification, and compliance documentation

Security Systems:

• Install, configure, and commission integrated security systems including CCTV, access control, intrusion detection, and related technologies
• Perform routine and reactive maintenance on security systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability
• Conduct software updates, hardware upgrades, and comprehensive system diagnostics
• Configure and install remote signalling devices, commission systems, and fully test signalling to Alarm Receiving Centres (ARCs)

What We're Looking For

Fire Systems Experience:

• Proven and demonstrable experience in fire alarm systems maintenance gained over a number of years
• Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of BS5839 standards and their practical application
• Experience servicing and maintaining both addressable and conventional fire alarm systems

Security Systems Experience:

• Proven experience installing, configuring, and maintaining security systems (CCTV, access control, intrusion detection)
• Strong technical competence in networking protocols, hardware installation, and fault diagnosis
• Proficiency in security protocols including TCP/IP, SSL, AES, and relevant signalling standards

General Requirements:

• Full UK Driving Licence (essential)
• FIA (Fire Industry Association) qualifications or equivalent fire alarm training
• Relevant professional certifications (e.g., ECS/CSCS cards, NSI/SSAIB accreditation, Certified Security Systems Professional, or equivalent) (Highly Desirable)
• Willingness to participate in the on-call rota to support emergency response requirements (Highly Desirable)

• Working Hours: 36.5 hours per week (Monday-Thursday 08:45-16:40, Friday 08:45-16:00), On-Call Rota: Currently 1 in 8 weeks, with a £200 standby allowance per week. Call-Out Payments: Minimum 3 hours paid at applicable overtime rates for the first call-out per occurrence. Travel Time Compensation: Paid after 1-hour cumulative travel time (e.g., 30 minutes each way). Overtime Opportunities: Available by agreement - paid at time and a half (Monday-Saturday) and double time (Sundays and Bank Holidays)
