Job description

Position Summary

The Financial Counselor assists patients and their families with a host of services to ensure that the process of collecting payments is fully explained and is as comfortable as possible.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  1. Understand the importance Orlando Health places on providing exemplary customer service and perform job functions to meet department customer service goals.
  2. Demonstrate a positive and professional approach and communicate effectively with customers and team members.
  3. Efficiently and accurately gather and input patient/guarantor demographic and financial information.
  4. Contact Primary Care or Admitting Physician to obtain authorizations, diagnosis, and procedure details as necessary.
  5. Explain necessary forms and obtain signatures from patient/guarantor.
  6. Contact appropriate payers, verify benefits, and obtain necessary authorizations.
  7. Explain insurance benefits and collect co-pays, deductibles, and self-pay portions due.
  8. Collect for related professional care when appropriate.
  9. Document authorization and benefit information in registration system.
  10. Assemble patient record and obtain copies of relevant documents including insurance cards, photo IDs, and advance directives.
  11. Demonstrate basic knowledge of third-party reimbursement requirements and regulations.
  12. Use registration systems, electronic verification tools, and web resources competently.
  13. Follow Patient Financial Services policies, including completion of Guarantor Financial Statement Application, explanation of payment options, and collections of monies due.
  14. Handle cash in accordance with policies.
  15. Perform basic cashiering functions.
  16. Collect and inventory patient valuables following policy guidelines.
  17. Understand the medical necessity screening process and systems.
  18. Perform pre-registration functions, including communication with physician offices, insurance payers, and patients/guarantors.
  19. Maintain departmental logs for statistical reporting.
  20. Meet Quality Assurance standards and departmental goals regarding collections, productivity, and customer service.
  21. Maintain flexibility in work schedule to meet departmental needs.
  22. Comply with federal, state, and hospital requirements related to compliance and policies.
  23. Maintain regular, punctual attendance according to policies and standards.
  24. Adhere to all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
Other Related Functions
  1. Attend and participate in department meetings and other assigned meetings.
  2. Review and adhere to all Patient Financial Services and departmental education initiatives.
  3. Complete all recertification and education requirements annually.
  4. Assist managers in planning and organizing department activities.
Qualifications

Education/Training

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Complete Patient Financial Services Orientation and annual educational requirements.

Licensure/Certification

None required.

Experience

  • At least two (2) years of experience in a financial, business office, or customer service environment.
  • Proficient in Windows Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Typing proficiency.
  • One (1) year of PC/Windows experience.
