Job description

About Vinterior

Vinterior is the UK's leading marketplace for premium pre-owned furniture and homeware. We connect buyers with professional sellers offering vintage, antique and contemporary pieces, making it easier to find furniture with character and give beautiful things a longer life.

Founded in 2016 and backed by investors including Seedcamp, Venrex, Active Partners and Channel 4 Ventures, we're building a sustainable alternative to buying new, with ambitions to grow across Europe.

We're a small, remote team with a practical, entrepreneurial approach. People here take ownership, work closely across functions and get involved in the detail. You'll have the opportunity to make a visible difference to the business while helping more people choose pre-owned.

Role Overview

As Financial Controller, you'll own the day-to-day running of Vinterior's finance function, reporting directly to our Founder & CEO, Sandrine, and managing our Finance Manager.

This is a broad, hands-on role in a small team. You'll keep our accounts accurate, our cash well managed and our reporting timely, while taking ownership of financial controls, compliance and improvements to how we operate. You'll also get involved in the practical contractual and people administration questions that come with running a small business.

You enjoy understanding how things work, investigating discrepancies and seeing problems through to resolution. You're comfortable moving between detailed financial work and conversations about budgets, profitability and business priorities.

There is scope to grow into Head of Finance and, over time, Finance Director as you demonstrate the commercial judgement, leadership and impact required, and as the business develops.

What You'll Do
  • Own financial control and reporting. Deliver accurate month-end accounts, balance-sheet reconciliations and clear financial reporting for the leadership team and Board. Maintain reliable revenue recognition and investigate discrepancies
  • Keep marketplace payments running smoothly. Ensure transactions reconcile across our platform, payment providers and accounting system, including seller payouts, refunds, fees and foreign exchange. Identify and resolve revenue leakage
  • Manage cash and financial planning. Maintain cash-flow forecasts, budgets and a rolling financial outlook. Explain variances, challenge assumptions and flag risks early, with practical recommendations
  • Take ownership of compliance. Keep financial, tax and relevant marketplace obligations organised and up to date, including statutory accounts, VAT and international requirements. Identify gaps, coordinate specialist advice where needed and ensure actions are completed
  • Oversee payroll and support people administration. Ensure payroll is accurate and timely. Work with the colleague responsible for people administration to keep employment documentation and contractual changes accurate, current and appropriately reviewed
  • Improve commercial performance. Help colleagues understand the financial impact of their decisions. Identify opportunities to improve margins, payment costs and operating expenditure, and help turn recommendations into results
  • Make processes and systems better. Own our finance systems, including Xero and payment-provider reporting. Use automation and AI where useful to reduce manual work and strengthen accuracy and controls
  • Deliver improvements across teams. Work with Product, Engineering, CX and other colleagues on projects such as payment changes and international expansion
  • Develop the finance function. Manage and coach our Finance Manager, delegate effectively and document key processes so the function runs reliably. Manage external accounting relationships and other specialist support
Why join us?
  • Own a finance function. Take meaningful responsibility for how finance runs, with direct access to the Founder & CEO and visibility across the business
  • See the impact of your work. Your improvements to reporting, payments, costs and controls will make a tangible difference
  • Build your leadership experience. Develop a colleague, work across functions and broaden your commercial judgement, with scope to progress as your contribution grows
  • Work towards a mission that matters. Help make pre-owned furniture a compelling alternative to buying new
  • Enjoy remote working and close collaboration. Work independently while staying connected to a small, practical and entrepreneurial team
Requirements
  • You have a professional accounting qualification such as ACA, ACCA or CIMA, or substantial equivalent experience running financial control and reporting
  • You have personally owned month-end accounts, reconciliations, cash forecasting and budgeting. You're comfortable doing the detailed work yourself as well as reviewing someone else's
  • You enjoy working in a small business where responsibilities are broad and you can make improvements without waiting for a detailed brief
  • You take pride in getting things right. When something doesn't reconcile or an obligation is unclear, you investigate, establish what needs to happen and follow through
  • You bring sound judgement and commercial curiosity. You can explain what the numbers mean, challenge assumptions constructively and recommend practical action
  • You communicate clearly with colleagues outside finance, involve the right people early and raise problems before they become surprises
  • You can support and develop a colleague, delegate effectively and manage external accounting relationships
  • You're confident with accounting systems, spreadsheets and financial modelling, and interested in using new tools to improve how you work
  • You can work independently in a remote team while staying connected, responsive and organised

Experience in a marketplace, e-commerce business or founder-led company would be useful, as would exposure to Xero, payment platforms, international VAT or broader business compliance. You don't need to have encountered every issue before, but you do need the curiosity and judgement to work out how to address it.

Benefits
  • Annual Leave: 25 days of paid leave in addition to 8 bank holidays
  • Private Medical Insurance: Comprehensive private medical insurance coverage to ensure your well-being
  • Health and Well-being Allowance: A monthly allowance of £50 for health and well-being expenses
  • Charity Days: You will receive paid leave to support your chosen charity and make a positive impact on the community
  • Tenure Gift: You will receive additional paid leave for 1+ years of service to the company
