Job description

The purpose of the role:

The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing all aspects of a company's financial operations, ensure the accurate and timely presentation of monthly management accounts, the annual budget and mid-year forecast and for accurately forecasting the end of year financial performance for the business as the year progresses.

The Financial Controller will ensure compliance with all financial regulations and standing orders and drive the continuous improvement of our internal control framework.

Leading the management accounts and business partnering teams (3 FTE), this role uses financial expertise, a deep business knowledge and great communication and influencing skills to provide the strategic financial insights that enable and support EMT and SMT in developing:

  • A business wide focus on identifying and mitigating future business risk.
  • An improved understanding of budget and actual spend compared to planned outcomes and objectives.
  • New financial analysis (routine, ad hoc and deep dive) to enable departmental managers to assess the effectiveness of strategies employed to deliver corporate plan goals.
  • A prioritised programme of future opportunities to drive Value for Money.
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and present accurate monthly, quarterly and annual management accounts, including income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements to SMT and Board.
  • Develop financial KPI's to support colleagues in prioritising initiatives that deliver increased value for money.
  • Develop and manage the company's budget and mid-year forecast, including re forecasting future financial performance and identifying potential risks and opportunities.
  • Implement and maintain robust internal controls to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  • Ensure adherence to relevant accounting standards, tax regulations, and corporate governance guidelines.
  • Supervise the management accounting and business partnering teams, to ensure accounting records are kept up to date throughout the month and stakeholder reporting requirements are met.
  • Analyse financial data to identify trends, variances, and potential areas for improvement, providing insights.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the company's overall financial strategy, including risk management.
  • Develop new analysis and insight as required, to influence, support and improve customer decision making.
  • Support the development of financial literacy of non-financial colleagues to assist in the understanding of financial performance.

Personal Skills:

Strong understanding of accounting principles and standards (IFRS), and internal and external regulations and compliance requirements.

Clear and concise communication techniques to effectively present financial information to senior management.

Excellent analytical skills which can diagnose root cause and generate insights from trends / patterns in large data sets.

Proficiency in financial modelling and data analysis to interpret complex financial information and present it in an impactful way.

Fosters meaningful relationships with colleagues at all levels across the organisation, based on mutual trust and accountability.

Thinks creatively, working with ambiguous or incomplete data to diagnose and solve complex problems, offering multiple solutions where appropriate.

Good attention to detail with tools and techniques (reconciliations) to ensure accuracy in analysis created.

Challenge, influence and negotiate with colleagues to deliver our Corporate Plan objectives.

Self-motivated, disciplined, organised and deadline driven, taking ownership for delivering high quality services to the business.

Ability to identify and resolve financial issues proactively

Resilience in a diverse organisation when faced with conflicting demands.

Experience:

Experience of managing complex problems and the ability to dissect the problem into actionable component parts.

Experience of complex project management, requiring cross functional coordination in effective and timely delivery of identified outcomes.

Experience using technical expertise in a business partnering/consultative role where actions and influencing are required to achieve the optimum collective result.

Experience operating in an environment where data is used to drive unbiased recommendations and decisions.
