Job summary

NFP People invites applications for a Financial Controller role in Oxford, operating in a hybrid setup with about 60% office time. You will lead financial control, reporting, and audits, guiding budget holders and stakeholders with trusted financial insight in a mission-driven organisation.

You will be a qualified accountant with charity finance expertise (UK regulation knowledge) and at least three years senior experience, driving improvements in processes and accuracy across the finance

Responsibilities

Location: Oxford, Hybrid (60% office based)

Are you an experienced finance professional looking for an opportunity to use your expertise within a purpose-led, international organisation?

We are looking for a Financial Controller to take the lead on financial control, reporting, audit management and the continued development of effective finance processes and systems. This is a senior technical finance position, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and providing trusted financial expertise and advice across the organisation.

Working within a global, multicultural environment, you will play an important role in ensuring strong financial stewardship while supporting colleagues and budget holders to make informed financial decisions.

About the role

As Financial Controller, you will be the organisation's lead expert on financial accounting, controls, Charity SORP compliance and statutory reporting. You will oversee key financial processes, support the preparation of management and annual accounts, and act as the principal contact for external auditors.

You will also lead and develop members of the finance team, helping to create an efficient, supportive and continuously improving finance function.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Leading on financial accounting, financial controls, Charity SORP compliance and statutory reporting
• Preparing statutory accounts and managing the annual external audit
• Overseeing month-end and year-end close processes
• Supporting the production of monthly management accounts, annual budgets and financial forecasts
• Monitoring and analysing financial performance to identify risks, trends and opportunities
• Providing clear and practical financial guidance to budget holders and managers
• Overseeing income and expenditure processes, ensuring financial information is recorded accurately and efficiently
• Leading improvements to finance processes, systems and controls
• Managing and supporting members of the finance team, including regular one-to-ones and annual reviews
• Building effective relationships with colleagues, external service providers and other key stakeholders

About you

You will be a fully qualified accountant, or have equivalent experience, with relevant knowledge of charity finance and UK regulations. You will bring at least three years' finance experience at a senior level and have a strong understanding of Charities SORP (FRS 102) and UK financial reporting requirements.

You will also have:

• Experience of setting and monitoring budgets
• Experience of successfully implementing change
• The ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues
• A high level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel
• Confidence using Microsoft 365, including Word, Outlook and Teams
• A logical, methodical and solutions-focused approach
• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise competing deadlines
• Strong attention to detail, alongside the ability to see the bigger financial picture
• The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team

Experience within a charity finance environment, working with CRM or ERP systems, or using financial data to inform business decisions would be advantageous. Knowledge of French or Spanish, international working experience, or experience of IFRS and US GAAP would also be beneficial.
