Job summary

Membershipbespoke seeks a senior Financial Controller to lead technical delivery and financial control. You will oversee month-end, balance sheets, VAT and pensions, and ensure audit readiness for a charity with social purpose.

You will collaborate with the Finance Director on planning, risk, and financial modelling, providing guidance and day-to-day technical support to colleagues.

Qualifications

• Significant experience in a technical finance or accounting role.
• Strong knowledge of financial controls, reconciliations and balance sheet management.
• Experience with VAT, pensions reporting and audit schedules.
• Proven month-end processes and financial governance experience.
• Ability to communicate financial information to non-finance stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Lead the month-end close, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting.
• Oversee balance sheet integrity, reconciliations, accruals and journals.
• Maintain and strengthen financial controls, policies and processes.
• Manage VAT, pensions, fixed assets and statutory processes.
• Ensure audit readiness and regulatory compliance.
• Review bad debt, deferred income and prepayments.

• Support budgeting, forecasting and financial modelling.
• Provide technical accounting guidance and challenge.
• Collaborate with Finance Director on planning and risk.

Financial Controller

We are supporting a UK charity in the appointment of a Financial Controller to lead the technical delivery and financial control of its finance function.

This is a senior technical accounting role, reporting to the Finance Director, with responsibility for ensuring the integrity, accuracy and compliance of financial information across the organisation.

The Financial Controller will:

• Lead the month-end close, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting
• Oversee balance sheet integrity, reconciliations, accruals and journals
• Maintain and strengthen financial controls, policies and processes
• Manage VAT, pensions, fixed assets and statutory financial processes
• Ensure strong audit readiness and regulatory compliance
• Review bad debt, deferred income and prepayments
• Produce and review financial reports for SLT and Trustees
• Support budgeting, forecasting and financial modelling
• Provide technical accounting guidance and constructive challenge
• Work closely with the Finance Director on financial planning and risk
• Support colleagues with financial information and day-to-day technical queries

We are looking for an accounting professional with:

• Significant experience in a technical finance or accounting role
• Strong knowledge of financial controls, reconciliations, balance sheet management and statutory reporting
• Experience with VAT, pensions reporting and audit schedules
• Proven experience managing month-end processes and financial governance
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail
• The ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders
• Confidence using finance systems and Excel
• AAT Level 4 or NVQ Level 4required;ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent desirable
• Experience within a charity, not-for-profit or complex organisationwould be advantageous
