Job description

The place to work in pathology

We are looking for top talent to join the UK's leading and fastest growing pathology company - a scientific organisation with a clinical purpose.

Working in partnership with our service partners, Guy's and St. Thomas' Hospitals, King's College Hospital and Princess Royal University Hospital, we aim to set the standard for the future of pathology.

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Finance Business Partner to join our busy and professional finance team.

We are seeking an experienced FBP, either fully qualified or in the final stages of qualification, with a background in management accounting and working with large data sets. This role offers exposure to senior stakeholders across both finance and our pathology labs.

Reporting to the Senior Finance Business Partner - Blood and Tissue, you will act as a key link between central Finance and Synnovis Analytics & Services operations. This is a semi-autonomous role with the opportunity to add real value through proactive collaboration and financial insight.

You will work closely with operational leads to interpret and communicate financial performance, support delivery of budget targets, and identify areas for improvement. Each month, you'll gather financial and operational data to produce reporting packs, lead variance analysis, and contribute to budgeting and forecasting. You'll also support business cases, contract reconciliations, and pricing analysis.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to step into a visible, business-facing role with real impact.

Main duties of the job

As part of the Finance Business Partnering team, you'll collaborate closely with Operations to help drive performance and deliver financial insight across the organisation. While the role is based at our Head Office, regular engagement with stakeholders and teams across our hospital sites is essential.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Producing monthly reporting packs using data from multiple financial and operational sources
  • Partnering with site leads to support decision-making and performance improvement
  • Conducting variance analysis and contributing to budgeting and reforecasting cycles
  • Supporting the development of business cases, pricing of new tests, and commercial proposals
  • Managing monthly contract reconciliations, invoicing, and data accuracy

This is a fast-paced, collaborative role that offers the chance to build strong business relationships and make a meaningful impact on financial performance.

Working for our organisation

Your development and learning

You will have a suite of learning opportunities available through The Synnovis Way Development programme, which is used across Synnovis to enable you to reach your potential, learn new skills, and achieve your goals.

This is managed between you and your line manager in line with your personal and professional development ambitions.

You can apply for finance to drive innovation and service development for the benefit of patients through our Innovation Accelerator Fund.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

At Synnovis, we are shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with NHS partners. A significant part of this involves moving 70% of our services to a new, state-of-the-art Hub laboratory in London. Initially, this role will be based at one of our hospital sites; from 1 April 2024, services will transition to the Hub in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work in refurbished laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on urgent tests. Please ask your recruiting manager for more details.

Currently, our offices are in Paris Garden, Blackfriars SE1, or Francis House, Southwark SE1, but these are temporary. We plan to move to the new offices in the Hub building in Blackfriars in 2024.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with non-finance teams (e.g., operations, HR, procurement) to support decision-making
  • Act as the key finance contact for business area leaders
  • Present performance to SFBP, CFO, COO, and Lead FBP
  • Support decision-making around new hires, capital equipment, etc.
  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning
  • Track actual performance against budget, providing variance analysis and commentary
  • Handle reconciliations, journal postings, and month-end P&L close responsibilities
  • Prepare and circulate monthly management reports
  • Manage customer contracts to ensure payments and charges are up to date, disputes are resolved, and contract developments are timely
  • Develop pricing models for new tests and service enhancements
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and support efficiency initiatives
  • Monitor cost drivers and enhance cost transparency
  • Support the production of quality business cases
  • Assist with ad hoc requirements as needed
  • Contribute to financial systems development and process efficiencies
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Support junior finance staff or lead small teams

Synnovis is a partnership between SYNLAB UK and Ireland and the NHS, delivering and transforming pathology services across South East London, serving 1.7 million residents and additional patients from outside the region.
