Job description

Join our Gas-Insulated Substation (GIS) team as an Onsite Services Specialist - GIS Supervisor. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge GIS projects across various client sites. We're looking for a professional with a solid background in GIS or Mechanical Engineering, with a strong understanding of electrical systems. The role demands flexibility, as it involves extensive travel within the UK and potentially overseas. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the highest standards of health, safety, and quality during the installation and maintenance of GIS systems, delivering exceptional service and quality products to our clients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure the overall quality and integrity of the GIS installation/maintenance process, adhering to GE's highest standards.
  • Nonconformity Management: Manage the identification, reporting, and resolution of product-based nonconformities (NCPs), ensuring timely closure.
  • Client Liaison: Act as the primary point of contact between the GIS product unit and service clients, addressing product and installation issues.
  • Project Reporting: Provide regular updates on project progress and any product issues to the GIS Project Manager.
  • Team Leadership: Oversee the daily management and task allocation for field teams, maximizing project success through efficient operation.
  • Safety Promotion: Foster a culture of safety on-site, promoting best practices and continuous improvement in safety standards.
  • Site Visits: Conduct investigative visits to assess equipment condition and report on equipment failure.
  • Documentation: Ensure accurate records, reports, and quality documentation are maintained according to GE's internal governance and quality plans.
  • Technical Oversight: Supervise the installation, repair, commissioning, and maintenance of GE products, ensuring technical integrity.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
Educational Background:
  • A diploma or degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering (City & Guilds, ONC, HND, or equivalent) is preferred but not essential. A strong foundational knowledge in these disciplines would be advantageous for understanding the complexities of GIS systems.
Certifications:
  • Possession of an IOSH Managing Safely certification or similar is desirable, reflecting a commitment to health and safety standards in all work environments.
Technical Experience:
  • Extensive hands-on experience in substation primary plant construction and installation techniques, including familiarity with the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of high-voltage GIS equipment and related infrastructure.
  • Proven experience as a substation secondary wireman is advantageous, as this role involves detailed work on the secondary systems of substations, such as control and protection systems, wiring, and instrumentation.
Regulatory Knowledge:
  • A thorough understanding of the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, including the responsibilities and duties of the Principal Contractor and Contractor, is vital for compliance with legal and safety standards during project execution.
Field Competence:
  • Experience in managing field operations, including task delegation, resource management, and coordination with various stakeholders (e.g., clients, engineers, subcontractors).
  • Competence in conducting site visits for equipment condition monitoring, failure analysis, and reporting, including a methodical approach to assessing and documenting the state of GIS systems.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Demonstrated ability to promote and enforce safe working practices, including conducting risk assessments, implementing safety measures, and fostering a culture of safety among team members.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance processes and the ability to manage nonconformities (NCPs), ensuring that all installations meet GE's stringent quality standards.
Management Skills:
  • Experience in project reporting and communication, providing clear and concise updates on project progress, issues, and resource utilization.
  • Ability to manage budget and timeline constraints, ensuring that projects are delivered on time and within budget.
Additional Skills:
  • Comfortable working in diverse and challenging environments, including heights and confined spaces.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively, both within the UK and potentially overseas, to meet project requirements and client needs.

These qualifications and experiences ensure that the candidate can effectively fulfill the key responsibilities of the GIS Supervisor role, maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency.
