Job summary

The Met Office is seeking an exceptional Roaming Network Officer to support our world-class weather observations across the UK.

The role is hybrid, requiring time at weather stations, the Watnall office, and from home. It involves extensive travel, overnight stays, and occasional visits to Exeter HQ to support the Surface Observations Operations Team.

You will install instruments, inspect sites, coordinate with voluntary observers, and ensure high-quality data for weather and climate records.

Qualifications

  • Broad knowledge of land observing systems and instrumentation operation in different environments.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, manage multiple tasks, and prioritise a busy schedule.
  • Willingness to work outside normal hours and undertake overnight site visits.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to influence, negotiate and build relationships with observers and teams.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect and assess observing sites, install or repair equipment, and advise on instrument deployment.
  • Instruct and support voluntary observers to improve observation quality and quantity.
  • Monitor site performance to ensure timely data, calibration, and availability.
  • Collect and archive site metadata in line with international requirements.
  • Plan site visits efficiently and maintain stocks of calibrated instruments and literature.
  • Collaborate with Surface Observations Operations and other Network officers for quality management.
  • Occasionally visit land observation sites at short notice to support national weather records.
